There was also a Promed report on a clinic in South America, where folks have been going for 'tummy tucks' and it is passing on the same disease, if my memory is correct.

2 or 3 years ago, it got loose in the U.S., there were several cases of it in the L.A. calif area.

Man treated for flesh-eating disease

10:26 PM EDT on Tuesday, April 27, 2004

WHAS11 News

A Kentuckiana man was happy to be home from the hospital Tuesday night after being treated for a rare disease.

Bud Clark, 75, spent the past 81 days hospitalized as he battled flesh-eating bacteria.

Clark said it hit him back in February, and felt like the flu.

Doctors aren't sure how he got the disease.

Doctors at Baptist East Hospital used a steady stream of antibiotics and performed more than a half dozen surgeries to cut away Clark’s diseased tissue to save his life.

Clark said he just felt lucky to be alive.

Both patients were treated at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Saint John, New Brunswick, where the surviving patient remained in serious condition on Sunday with necrotizing fasciitis, better known as flesh-eating disease, hospital officials said.
