Bush aims to reach Christians on Day of Prayer

WASHINGTON - President Bush's participation in a National Day of Prayer ceremony with evangelical Christian leaders at the White House will be shown tonight, for the first time in prime-time viewing hours, on Christian cable and satellite TV outlets nationwide.

For the president, the broadcast is an opportunity to address a sympathetic evangelical audience without the risk of alienating secular or non-Christian viewers, because it will not be carried in full by any of the major television networks. Frank Wright, president of the National Association of Religious Broadcasters, said more than a million evangelicals are expected to see the broadcast.


She made no apologies about the task force's exclusion of Muslims and others outside of the "Judeo-Christian tradition" from ceremonies planned by the task force on Capitol Hill and in state capitals across the country. "They are free to have their own national day of prayer if they want to," she said. "We are a Christian task force."

The White House press office and presidential adviser Karl Rove's office did not respond to calls seeking comment on the National Day of Prayer observances.

Spartanburg County Fire Trucks, Equipment Vandalized
Brake Lines, Hoses, Breathing Equipment Damaged

LYMAN, S.C. -- Firefighters at the Holly Springs fire station on Hwy 357 in Lyman are trying to figure out who slashed brake lines on a fire truck, cut fire hoses and damaged air supply units at the station.

The issues were discovered on a routine safety check two weeks ago.

“I realized we had been hit by vandals,” said Casey Barnett, a Holly Springs firefighter. “It’s hard to stop a truck without brakes -- and our trucks didn't have any brakes,” he said.

The hose cuts “were so big that we would have lost total pressure” using them, he said.

And the damage to the breathing unit cut its operating time from 30 minutes to about 2 minutes, firefighters say.

Fire Chief Lee Jeffcoat says the five damaged trucks were parked in a locked building for the night when they were damaged.

“How (the vandals) got in there is still a mystery,” he said, since there were no signs of forced entry.

“Something to this nature doesn't sound like a disgruntled fireman. This is someone who is out to seriously hurt or kill someone,” Jeffcoat said.

Barnett said, “It’s not hurting the fire department itself, it’s hurting the whole community, and no one in the community needs that.”

Authorities are investigating the incident, while the fire station’s 30 volunteers keep a closer watch on their equipment.

Anyone with information relating to the vandalism is asked to call the Spartanburg County Sheriff at (864) 596-2646.

DHAKA, Feb. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Two foreign aircraft staff died of mysterious disease in the last two days in southeast Bangladesh.

According to the Daily Star on Sunday, Ivor Nikolavich, co-pilot of a Ukrainian cargo plane and national of Moldavia, reportedly fell ill Saturday with some "respiratory problems," andwas hospitalized in a critical condition in Cox's Bazar, the country's southeastern coastal resort.

The pilot died hours after he was shifted to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital. The incident, however, is not isolated as on Friday another Moldavian ground engineer Cuznetov Aleg also died shortly after hewas sent to a hospital in Cox's Bazar. The postmortem on Aleg's body was first conducted on Friday evening, then at the instruction of the higher authorities, a second postmortem on the body was carried out on Saturday morning by a five-member medical board. Aleg's hair and other organs have been sent to the capital Dhaka for viscera report.

Both the foreign staff worked for charted Ukrainian cargo planes owned by four local private airlines, namely ATL, THT, Budget Airways and Air Parabat, which reportedly engaged in transporting shrimp fry from Cox's Bazar to southwestern Bangladesh.

An intelligence source was quoted as saying they received orders to check all goods carried by those cargo planes, but an "influential quarter" barred them from doing so.

Since the two victims along with some 20 other Russian-origin aircraft workmates all lived in a local hotel, the Cox's Bazar district administration has asked the remaining pilots and staff of Ukrainian aircraft not to leave the hotel until they undergo medical test. The administration also set up a two-member inquiry team to look into the incidents.

Just reported on our local news in Virginia, a military plane has gone down in Franklin County which is close to Roanoke, VA. Two men were able to eject safely from the plane. Details are still sketchy.

Thought to be an F15 or 16 military plane. The pilot spoke to an eyewitness on the ground after he ejected and used the eyewitness's cell phone to dial his command post. The phone number began with 919 which is the Raleigh-area area code. Said they were flying at 5700 feet and everything was fine. Then all of a sudden boom. Said that maybe they flew into a flock of birds. Eyewitnesses on the ground said they saw flames out the back of the plane and that the plane came apart. However these are first reports and I guess they can change as more information is gathered.

Local news said the area was being evacuated in case there was anything suspicious on board the aircraft, whatever that means.

Do birds fly at that height? And wasn't there another military plane which crashed at the RDI airport about a month ago?

Bin Laden Offers Gold for Killing Bremer, Annan

DUBAI (Reuters) - A purported statement by al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) offered rewards in gold for killing U.S Iraq (news - web sites) administrator Paul Bremer or U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan (news - web sites), an Islamist Web site said on Thursday.

The statement posted on the Web site said the 22 lb gold reward would also be given to anyone who kills other officials including Bremer's deputy or U.N. envoy to Iraq Lakhdar Brahimi.


"We in al Qaeda organization are committed to a prize of 10,000 grams of gold to whoever kills Bremer, his deputy, the commander of American forces or his deputy in Iraq," it said.


It was not possible to verify the authenticity of the statement, which the Web site said was the text of an audio recording by bin Laden.


The recording could not be immediately downloaded.


At current prices, the reward in gold would be worth around $125,000.
