Meter Reader Turns Around To Find Truck Stolen

CHARLOTTE, NC -- Grady Ray was checking a water meter at North Tryon and Dalton Avenue Tuesday morning, when a man jumped into his utilities truck and drove away in it.

Ray left the truck running for only short time while he went to check a meter. Someone called out to him to let him know his truck was being stolen.

The truck is described as a small white pick-up with green Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities lettering on each side.

Fire Update from KNBC LA news:

Camp Pendleton 85% contained.

Cerritos fire 9000 acres (Corona)now burning towards Lake Elsinore 8-10 miles from homes. Advancing rapidly moved 8-10 miles in just last 1/2 hour. All dry brush is making fire move like lightening towards I-15. There is less wind, which is some help. 6 structures lost. Man charged with setting fires with equipment, not purposely.

Fire passed near Perris (Cerritos fire) last night fire burned through there quickly 6 structures lost, 100's of homes saved by FF. Group of homes were surrounded by fire and FF saved them.

Temecula: some residents ordered out. No progress overnight 4000 acres burned. Near Rancho California 150 homes are threatened mandatory evac. More than 1400 FF on scene. 4 structures including 2 homes burned. Command post moved to Lake Skinner camp ground because fire moved too close to their other post last night. 3 motorcyclists still sought which were spotted near fire start on Sunday.

Did you get to see the big Leoinid shower a few years back? It was the most amazing celestial event I've ever seen. Literally hundreds of big streaking meteors in the air at all times. I was spellbound for 8 hours. Everywhere I looked there were meteors. Saw lots of exploders. Simply amazing.

It prompted me to drive 8 hours to get out from under the cloud deck the next year, though it was nothing even close to the previous years shower (fall 2001 I believe was the Big one).

Why don't they publish the 4 burned bodies of Americans hanging from the bridge, why not show the poor soul whose dead body was drug behind a car in Saudi Arabia after they killed civilian employees of oil companies. Our news needs to show these, they have the Iraqi pictures of prisoners on almost every 15 minutes which is NOT going to help our relations with the ME. The media was afraid to show the pictures of our burned Americans, but not the naked Iraqis. I'm frankly sick of seeing those disgusting pictures and the people who did it should face a court martial.

It was a very unfortunate incident, but needs to be investigated by the military and NOT on TV every 15 minutes on every station. Why don't they replace some of that with good news, the schools opening, the internet cafes, the shops open, the electricity on, sewers working, water you can drink, satellite dishes or TV's can be purchased, free press, oil pipelines that work, food and goods coming in for the shop owners and on and on. There is so much more GOOD news that is not being reported. Our media is doing more to lose the war in Iraq than anyone in my opinion.

Temecula fire burned the art colony place (I forget the exact name) that had evacuated earlier but that A LOT of houses they thought were lost were saved (which is what happened with the family I teach for in the Oct. fires...all their land was burning and they were told by the fire chief it was lost...24 hours later a neighbor hiked back into the area to see how bad it was and if anything had been saved, and to their surprise, nearly every home ended up largely making it).

I'm guessing what you heard about the Cerrito fire and those 100+ homes saved were the ones CHP was initially reporting were lost last night. So glad that ended up not being the case.

4000+ homes currently evacuated in the Cerrito area, and they are also saying 6 lost like you heard...so thankfully that hasn't gone up in the last little bit.

And for news they're trying to make sound even more grusome than it would be (just by the spin they are putting on it), two women walking near where I live found human remains... it's right near a park area where there are lots of fields/rec type area, and then there are trails. Guess that explains why I've been hearing the news choppers overhead this morning.
