BAGHDAD, April 26 -- It was supposed to be the perfect symbol for a new and unified Iraq: an Islamic crescent on a field of pure white, with two blue stripes representing the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and a third yellow stripe to symbolize the country's Kurdish minority.
But the new national flag, presented Monday after an artistic competition sponsored by the Iraqi Governing Council, appears to have met with widespread public disapproval here...

can you explain why we are presently enjoying the most expensive oil and fuel costs that we have ever known? Because our money is worth less today than it was 6 months ago.
By around 25%-30%.
And it's by design.
The administration said they were going to do it to improve our trade status and so they did.
So really, the cost isn't higher, it's just your money doesn't buy as much anymore. Doesn't that make you feel better?

Hi ICV, and welcome to FR.
Some of us still believe W when he says that we are there for the betterment of the Iraqi people...
I'm one of them, and while I do have some reservations about this administration, I think it is silly to imply that the Iraqi people are the only reason we are there; it is certainly NOT the primary reason.
...rather than securing the oil for our SUVs or protecting the Israelis.
I think both of these assertions are misplaced, and frankly, I have no problem with the 2nd one even if it were true.
But now our hand-picked Governing Council designs and decrees a new flag or Iraq, which looks stupid, ignores history and loudly tells the people there that they are not ever going to be in charge of their own land.
I have read little about how the council was selected and would appreciate where to locate the articles you have read. In any case, the phases of the US relinquishing control include an election - I don't see how this supports your claim, unless we will be sending over Democrats from Florida election boards to help keep everything running smoothly.

Wow! 25% inflation in six months? Did I miss something? Alan Green span must be sleeping on the job. The news media should be all over this one.
"Bush caused 25% inflation - Kerry Speaks out."
I just never saw it. Did this really happen in the U.S. or just in your mind?

I think they may be factoring in currency exchange rates, but 25% still seems high.

"In particular, people objected to the pale blue color of the crescent and stripes, saying it was identical to the dominant color in the flag of Israel, a Jewish state."That and it looked like the previous Georgia state flag created by Barnes.

Because our money is worth less today than it was 6 months ago. By around 25%-30%. So, in your view inflation has leaped from ~2% to 25-30% in the past 6 months? Funny, I noticed that Nissan is selling their Supra for $20,900 (that's cheaper). Food costs are about the same, as is my rent. Housing costs are still low, insurance and airfare is relatively constant. Crude oil prices are pushing $32/barrel; which is at an all time high.

Ahem
The policy I am referring to is the engineered devaluation of the dollar versus the Euro. To illustrate, less than a year ago we enjoyed an exchange rate of approximately 86 cents to one Euro. It now is around 1.19 for one Euro. This was not a mistake, this was a designed move. This was done under the hope that we could improve the attractiveness of American goods in Europe.
The Chinese pegged their currency to ours, so the move did nothing to make Chinese goods relatively more expensive.

We have to do this. It's part of the job description - look here: "Imperialist Running-Dog - full-time position. Exploits workers, robs natural resources from developing countries, keeps iron bootheel on the neck of the oppressed. Must be experienced in corporate corruption, police statism, crushing workers' rebellions, selected genocide, and state-subsidized environmental pollution programs."
Just be thankful they don't demand technical certification. The test's a b!tch.

How does it exactly "ignore" history and the flag was DESIGNED by Iraqis themselves. Well, on an earlier thread most Freepers gave it a thumbs down.
You have to remember that some of these Iraqi politicians are not exactly our friends and would like nothing better than to have a flag that would be an anti-American lightning rod. Imagine Jesse Jackson telling the Bush Administration that the way to get the black vote is to have Bush give a watermelon and fried chicken picnic on the White House lawn for Black History Week.
Read the other thread, judge for yourself and give us your input:

So, in your view inflation has leaped from ~2% to 25-30% in the past 6 months?Inflation certainly is not under 2% by any stretch. Government calculations exclude energy among other (obviously rising) costs. It is also simplistic to say "inflation" is at 25-30% but our currency has been devalued that much versus the Euro, not against every currency. Many other countries peg their currency to ours to defeat that strategy. If you noticed, Arab nations as well as Russia recently stated they wanted to sell oil denominated in Euros rather than dollars. Why would they do that, hmmn? After all, the mighty dollar has become the world's standard, right?

Actually, dumbass, I've been around since 97. And if you'd bother to read some news sources other than the comics you might actually think rather than kneejerk.

Just curious, but which candidate DO YOU really believe has the best interests of something other than their relationship with the world's $$$/power elitists?
You know, the ones that Bush and Kerry, both, (Blair too) are beholden to? Do you think the slide into a single world government to rule over all the earth will be more comfortable under a communist or a socialist?
Honestly, every time I get my hopes up, I realize today is just a distraction from what is really going on and who REALLY is running the world - it's not a secret anymore...
My new litmus test for all politicians is - I want to know about your involvement in Secret Societies and what that means to you today (oathes of the past). There is enough HIGHLY DISTURBING information about our leaders/wannabes involvement with the Skull and Bones and their vile practices in the dark (Bush AND Kerry I believe were S&B at Yale, but I must re-check that), the Bohemian Grove, the Bilderberg ritual - those for starters.
Don't talk to me about Jesus if you can't explain in detail, including renouncing, Secret Societies and the oaths (which is a sin) you take to them.
I sense America has been set up. I believe the UN will be running Iraq soon, and that American casualties must first grow before we do. Because we sure as spit aren't crushing the terrorists in Iraq.
The entire Spain, France, German, AQ, muslim, communist web is incredibly detailed and evil - and it's there sure as the sun came up this morning.
The fight for the direction of the NWO is on, and it's either going to be communists or muslims running the show - and today they are working together to defeat America from within and from without.

Canadians didn't like the maple leaf flag when it first came out, either. Flags take getting used to -- no matter how good they are.
