SENATE PANEL DEBATES LOCAL COOPERATION WITH IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT

STEIN REPORT Friday, April 23 2004 10:26:32 ET

SENATE PANEL DEBATES LOCAL COOPERATION WITH IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT

"Members of a Senate immigration subcommittee split Thursday over a bill by U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions that would explicitly allow state and local police to arrest or detain people for suspected immigration violations," the AP reports. "With only 2,000 enforcement agents inside the country, federal authorities need help to confront a population of illegal aliens estimated at 10 million, Sessions, R-Mobile, argued at the almost two-hour hearing. That imbalance is a signal that we have no interest in getting a handle on the terrorists coming into our country and no interest in enforcing the laws, he said."

"Sadly, it will learn when the next terrorist attack was committed by those entering the southern border."

That's roughly two thousand miles worth of border, as compared with the 5,600+ on the north...but HEY!

Who cares about the northern border, right?

What do these brain-trusts think the meaning of "law enforcment" is? Honest to God, what's to debate?

All the time I hear about how high school seniors can't read, and comprehension is at an all-time low.

I'm for means testing for the Congress and Senate. It's blatantly obvious the time for this has come.

Chambliss Says Immigration Laws In Dire Need Of Reform
posted April 22, 2004

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security and Citizenship, today released the following opening statement before a hearing titled: “State and Local Authority to Enforce Immigration Law: Evaluating a Unified Approach for Stopping Terrorists.”

“I’m glad we’re able to have this hearing today, and I appreciate Sen. Sessions’ efforts in this area, along with the efforts of my Georgia colleagues, Sen. Zell Miller and Rep. Charlie Norwood. This is an important topic that covers both our anti-terrorism efforts and the changes needed in our immigration system. In the post- 9-11 world, it is critical for us to think about immigration and national security with a consistent approach.

"I think there’s a consensus that our immigration laws are in dire need of reform, and today’s hearing is another step toward a comprehensive review. The system we have in place today lacks incentives for immigrants to come to the United States following the legal process in place. It also lacks enforcement against those who choose not to follow the legal process. It is my hope we may continue the open dialogue that the President has advanced, and all Senators will continue to work on the policies we’ve been addressing so far this Congress.

"There are some disturbing facts that show just how serious the lack of immigration enforcement can be. Three of the September 11 hijackers were stopped by state or local law enforcement officials in routine traffic stops in the weeks leading up to the attacks on our nation. In August 2001, an Arlington, Virginia police officer stopped Hani Hanjour for going 50 miles an hour in a 30 mile-per-hour zone. He was driving a van with New Jersey license plates and produced a Florida driver’s license to the officer. Hani Hanjour was aboard American Airlines flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon.

“On September 9, 2001, Maryland State Police stopped Ziad Jarrah for driving 90 miles an hour in a 65 mile-per-hour zone in a rural section of I-95 near the Delaware state line. A videotape of the stop shows the state trooper approaching the car, obtaining the driver’s license and registration, and returning to his patrol car for a radio check of the credentials. Jarrah, who was on a CIA watch list, was given a ticket and allowed to go. The registration showed the car Jarrah drove that night was owned by Garden State Car Rental at Newark, New Jersey’s International Airport. The car was found at the airport after the September 11 hijackings with the citation received by Jarrah still in the glove box. Jarrah had boarded United Flight 93 that crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

"Finally, Mohammed Atta was stopped by police in Tarmac, Florida in July 2001 and was ticketed for having an invalid license. He ignored the ticket and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest. He was stopped a few weeks later in a nearby town for speeding and the officer, unaware of the bench warrant, let him go with a warning. Hijacker Mohammed Atta is believed to have piloted American Airlines Flight 11 into the World Trade Center’s north tower.

“There is clearly a seriousness to today’s discussion. We need the laws to curb illegal behavior and to stop the bad guys. We also need laws that can be enforced and will be enforced. I am eager to begin that discussion and I appreciate our witnesses being here today.”

Problem is the "enemies within" like Teddy Kennedy, will do anything to promote a global socialist agenda and part of that agenda is to flood the country with future democratic voters.

The Congress should tie the receipt of certain Homeland Security funds to cooperation with immigration authorities. As they tie speed limit/seat belt laws to federal highway funds.

Screw these a-holes who interfere with immigration law.

Nonsense.

Any terror teams which are not already here will come from Canada. None but the dumbest would try to come over the Mexican border. Too dangerous, too uncertain and too likely to be detected. But from Canada it would be a cinch with none of the problems of a Southern crossing.

I essentially agree, although I think Ted is just too plain stupid to understand that first and foremost all humans want the same things. They want to be treated fairly in accordance with the rule of law, even if that mean deportation. They want law and order, so that their families are safe. They do not want to be talked down to, but rather shot straight with. Illegals do not respect us letting them rob us blind. They think, and quite rightly so IMO, that we are stupid dupes for allowing what we do. Just because Ted has no tinge of guilt for his activities, he thinks nobody else does. He is wrong.

["With only 2,000 enforcement agents inside the country, federal authorities need help to confront a population of illegal aliens estimated at 10 million, Sessions, R-Mobile, argued at the almost two-hour hearing."]

This is an outrage. We should have 2 million agents enforcing our borders right now. We should strip the budget of every non-defense related program to fund this fundamental constitutional requirement. I am so sick of hearing our corrupt, gutless, mealy mouthed politicians -- from BOTH parties -- complaining about insufficient resources. This is a disgrace and an abomination that has been foisted upon us which should outrage each and every US citizen. We should throw every gutless bum out of office who refuses to get on with their fundamental responsibility to protect our security. Actually, I think they should be tarred and feathered, but I am from another age.

Excellent idea.

Sounds like the Tancredo plan to cut back on highway funds to states that issue drivers licenses to illegal aliens.

I agree. And they'll keep on robbing us until law enforcement and politicians stop it.

As far as Kennedy goes, he never paid a bill in his life. he's an elitist who feels the law is meant for the peasants. Stupid? Maybe but he's sure been a senator along time. I just can't figure out how he keeps on getting re-elected.

If you're from another age, I was apparently born too late. I always enjoyed the idea of miscreants wearing tar and feathers getting a ride out of town on a rail.

I have my own pet punishment for those who aid and abet illegal aliens. Start with crushing fines and add mandatory jail time -- but add a twist. Send those convicted down here to me on the border.

They will live in tents with no air conditioning. They will spend their days working in Arizona's famous dry heat. When they first arrive, they can spend their days cleaning up the millions of pounds of trash and human waste that the illegals leave scattered in their wake. Next, they can be detailed out to the towns and ranchers to repair all the property damage done by illegals. Or they can be yoked together in teams to drag abandoned smuggler vehicles to the impound yard. It would make a Mississippi chain gang look like a tropical vacation.

Earned Legalization: grants legal permanent residency status to illegal immigrants, their spouses and minor children who have been living in the U.S. for at least 5 years, worked for an aggregate of 2 years, have no serious criminal record, are not a security risk, and "are committed" to learning English and civics.

What a steaming crock! Welcome to Amexica! Soon to be renamed Aztlan.
