Last night I unearthed an interesting videotape of the post-State of the Union message (Jan. 2002) coverage on the Larry King Live show. Bob Woodward was Larry's guest.
WOODWARD: "Suppose there are more attacks in this country. Suppose they come and are sponsored from some of the countries that we did not attack militarily. There's a whole group here in Washington who feels that Iraq should have been attacked along with Afghanistan. There are reasons why that was not done, but suppose it turns out that Iraq sponsors something--some sort of terrorist attack--in the United States.
Lots of people would say, 'Hey wait a minute, the wrong choices were made.' We are in a very risky situation for everyone in this country--everyone who travels abroad--but the president is, though, in a very strong position and certainly has done a remarkable job on this.
He is in a risky position. These people on the other side--we really don't know what they're up to, what they think they're going to get out of this. What are their goals? We have some general idea. I think they operate on timelines that we don't understand, and one of their doctrines is: attack when the American guard is down, so they are, you know, perhaps they're on vacation now, lots of them, at least psychologically, waiting for the guard to come down, and then they're going to attack."
Larry King then asked, "How well do you think this President has learned from his father?" heading the conversation toward the 80% popularity rate sinking because of the economy. Woodward didn't go there.
WOODWARD: "What interested me is that when Dan Bolts and I went to interview the president--his father never would have done that to be quite honest with you--during the Gulf War, I did a book called The Commanders and talked to lots of people, but President [George H. W.] Bush would never talk to me.
President Clinton would not let you go in and say, "Look, I really want to go through and ask questions: What happened? What did you think? What information was available? What were the alternatives?
This president [George W. Bush] feared it not at all and answered every question.
KING: "Therefore, well within himself."
Woodward (Jan. 2002) defends Bush, finds him forthcoming.
This transcript is not posted, but you might be able to get it from The Larry King Live show archives.
Wow, thanks ! Bumpity ! Bumpity ! Bumpity !
hahaha ! I love that cover ...
And the really neat thing is that the Bush campaign is linking his book from their website. The talk ABOUT the book has been BS. What he says IN the book actually is complimentary to President Bush.
All the Lefties took the bait, didn't read the book and went with Woodward's stupid interview comments.
Woodward is no good, imho .....
I think I got that all right, anyway.
Oh, yeah, me too. See my last post here .... #13, I think.
Lots of people would say, 'Hey wait a minute, the wrong choices were made.' We are in a very risky situation for everyone in this country--everyone who travels abroad--but the president is, though, in a very strong position and certainly has done a remarkable job on this.
That "whole group" of people takes issues and twists them to suit their obective of "Get President Bush". "He should have gone after Iraq!" "He shouldn't have gone into Iraq!" Whichever is most convenient to bash Bush is what they'll say.
Excellent work finding this. I have posted before that last summer when the yellowcake brouhaha was being flogged as a scandal, that it was Bob Woodward on LKL (again!) who calmly stated that President Bush had not misused intelligence and that the topic was being misrepresented.
Lol, bears repeating! But it's getting to be fun as a lot of the Vietnam Vets begin contradicting Kerry!
