"... but would not comment on the pro-abortion stand of Catholic presidential candidate John Kerry"

The cardinal already commented on Kerry - he said pro-abortion politicians should not recieve communion.

Why do these reporters expect that Kerry should be some sort of exception to the rules and morals of the Church he claims to follow?

No matter. In Kerry's own user-defined Bizarro-Catholicism, one can receive the Sacrament of Communion wherever he feels like it.

It seems to be part of their generally nihilistic philosophy of relativism. They would probably want a special exemption passed to make Michael Jackson Pope, if they could accomplish it.

It also seems to be a category mistake. They are trying to apply the fuzzywuzzy liberal ideas of inclusiveness and egalitarian entitlement to the Church. Next, they will want the Church to give Hillary Clinton Communion and all the celebrity bimbo marchers in the pro-abortion rally.

I believe it was the Cardinal that refused to comment on Kerry's receiving communion.

Hmmm... I wonder why the Cardinal felt he couldn't comment on that.
