April 22, 2004 -- WASHINGTON - An adviser to Iraq's government told Congress yesterday that at least three documents show the former head of the United Nations' oil-for-food program pocketed millions via sweetheart deals with Saddam Hussein. Benon Sevan, a Cypriot and U.N. undersecretary-general, is cited in separate documents indicating he received vouchers allowing him to purchase 7 million barrels of oil at reduced prices, said Claude Hankes-Drielsma, a British adviser to the Iraqi Governing Council.

The first Oil For Food story that I saw was Tish Durkin's and came out in 2002. This scandal's been brewing for at least that long. Where was Congress? They vote to provide taxpayer funds for the UN. What did Congress know and when did they know it?

When the whole flap over Iraq erupted I attributed the reluctance & hostility of our alleged allies to our cause as being based on fear of the unassimilated Muslims amongst them- and I still believe that was a prime motivator. However, it seems apparent now that money, too, contributed to their foot-dragging.

I should have know $$$ would be involved, as the most primal drivers of human beings are fear and greed.
