Jobs, good schools, low crime is what keep 'cityfolk' in the city. Hogwash. Everyone knows that Cool (or is it Hot) Jazz Clubs, LBGT-friendly atmospheres, diversity, and performace art theaters are what draws people. /stupidity

I was surprised by the great emphasis on the long term, Granholm said after a recent cool cities forum at Grand Valley State University. Young people, even those who are single, have focused on where they want to live when they have a family. Hmmm, she wants to keep intelligent young people. So, remembering her younger years she assumes they want glitzy places where they can party, but that's not what intelligent young people want. Hmmmmm.
And we, the good people of Michigan, trodge on wondering who decided this was a good time to put a clueless female at the helm.

Detroit News CyberSurvey results
Too hip for the room?
For the "cool cities" initiative, Gov. Granholm's office asked 13,000 young adults what they considered the most important attributes of a city. The leading responses were safe streets and affordability. What does this tell you?
All the cool kids have left Michigan 39.44%
Nightclubs, arts and hip shops aren't so important 14.44%
Survey didn't ask the right questions 29.44%
Other (specify) 11.11%

Instead of socially engineered coolness, what entrepreneurs truly need is the ability to get their businesses up and running without unnecessary government interference, said Sen. Michelle McManus, R-Lake Leelanau. Reasonable taxation means the difference between adding a new employee, expanding into a new location or pulling up stakes. As can be seen by the departure of more companies every day, Michigan is in desperate need of jobs, not java. People cannot and will not live where there are not enough jobs. Theres nothing cool about the unemployment line.
Hey, I've an idea! Let's raise the taxes on individuals and businesses so we can give money to the cities so they can make themselves cool. Then all the creative young people will move here so they can pay higher taxes and get paid lower wages because their employers are busy funding their cool city. Uh, ya.

Detroit can be a cooling place. A guy I worked with was shot to death on 8 mile road (the northern boundary of Detroit City) -- he cooled down quite quickly.
