BLITZER: Under pressure from Republicans and the news media, John Kerry's campaign today said it's working to release the Democratic presidential candidate's Vietnam-era military records and put them on his campaign Web site.
Kerry's long public career has been linked to Vietnam since the very beginning. He first rose to public prominence as an opponent of the war.

MICHAEL MEEHAN, SENIOR ADVISER, JOHN KERRY CAMPAIGN: Sure... "And Senator Kerry won a Silver Star..."Do military combatants or military leaders "win" medals? I was under the impression that they "earn" them for extra valor and therefore are "awarded".
Maybe F'n should have entered the snow-boarding race and WIN First Prize for being a total pompous fricking doofus.
This asshole twists my shorts - big time.

I found this on Kerry's web site:
Transform U.S. Force into a NATO Security Force Commanded by an American, and Bring in Other Countries.
Kerry believes it is possible to transform the U.S. force into a NATO force, commanded by an American. We should send a high-level mission to consult with our NATO partners to encourage their participation and get other countries to participate so that American soldiers and the American people are not bearing nearly all the burden and all the risk. The whole world has an interest in a stable Iraq, but the White House hasnt demonstrated the ability to bring in our friends and allies in a substantial way.

Senator Kerry volunteered to go to Vietnam, not once, but twice, two tours of duty,... Bravo Sierra! He didn't volunteer for a tour of duty on USS Gridley. He went where his ship was sent.
Westpac deployments were always referred to as cruises and never as tours. We knew the difference and so should they.

But I will use our military when necessary, but it is not primarily a military operation. It's an intelligence gathering, law enforcement, public diplomacy effort, and we're putting far more money into the war on the battlefield than we are into the war of ideas. We need to get it straight. Intelligence, public diplomacy, ideas... This is like trying to kill an enraged 1500 lb. Kodiak grizzly bear with a laptop computer. It won't work, John.

MEEHAN: I think Senator Kerry's testimony before the Senate in 1971 where he talked about others had talked about the things that happened during times of war, and that's what he testified before the Senate on, is that we had a war where things like this were happening and they didn't need to happen.
He apologized for some of his word choices. He was a young man who came back, had seen a lot in Vietnam, wanted this country to end that war, and came back and worked very hard to bring that war to an end.
In other words... TRUTH IS THAT WHICH SERVES THE REVOLUTION. Spoken like a true Communist!

Did Senator Kerry merely hear allegations of that sort as hearsay bandied about by members of antiwar groups (much of which has since been discredited)? To me, this assertion sounds exactly like the disinformation line that the Soviets were sowing worldwide throughout the Vietnam era. KGB priority number one at that time was to damage American power, judgment, and credibility. One of its favorite tools was the fabrication of such evidence as photographs and "news reports" about invented American war atrocities. These tales were purveyed in KGB-operated magazines that would then flack them to reputable news organizations. Often enough, they would be picked up. News organizations are notoriously sloppy about verifying their sources. All in all, it was amazingly easy for Soviet-bloc spy organizations to fake many such reports and spread them around the free world.
As a spy chief and a general in the former Soviet satellite of Romania, I produced the very same vitriol Kerry repeated to the U.S. Congress almost word for word and planted it in leftist movements throughout Europe. KGB chairman Yuri Andropov managed our anti-Vietnam War operation. He often bragged about having damaged the U.S. foreign-policy consensus, poisoned domestic debate in the U.S., and built a credibility gap between America and European public opinion through our disinformation operations. Vietnam was, he once told me, "our most significant success."
-- Ion Mihai Pacepa, the highest-ranking intelligence officer ever to defect from the Soviet bloc, in the National Review, February 26, 2004

He enlisted as an officer rather than be drafted into the Army.
The second time he was sent to Vietnam, he requested swift boats because, at that time, swift boats were NOT engaged in battles!

O'NEILL: Wolf, what you've got is the same seven or eight people recycled over and over again. I think you'll find when you match numbers out of Coastal Division 11, the people that knew him, the people that came from the unit like I did, I think you'll find that he'll get less votes than a Republican would get in South Boston. I think you'll find people are very, very angry at John Kerry. They remember his career in Vietnam as a short, controversial one. And they believe only Hollywood could turn this guy into a war hero. I saw some war heroes, Wolf. John Kerry is not a war hero. He couldn't tie the shoes of some of the people in Coastal Division 11"
Excellent. I'll pass this along

We were sent to Vietnam to kill Communism. But we found instead that we were killing women and children.
-- John Kerry, in "The New Soldier"
-----
As its dominant tactic in their battle against the war, the antiwar movement successfully demonized Vietnam veterans by calling a series of "tribunals" or hearings into war crimes. But... they were packed with pretenders and liars.
-- B.G. Burkett, in "Stolen Valor"
----
In order to get to where he is today, to run for president, John Kerry had to wade through the blood of American servicemen still on the battlefield in 1971.

I have been to Paris. I have talked with both delegations at the peace talks, that is to say the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the Provisional Revolutionary Government and of all eight of Madam Binh's points it has been stated time and time again, and was stated by Senator Vance Hartke when he returned from Paris, and it has been stated by many other officials of this Government, if the United States were to set a date for withdrawal the prisoners of war would be returned.
I think this negates very clearly the argument of the President that we have to maintain a presence in Vietnam, to use as a negotiating block for the return of those prisoners. The setting of a date will accomplish that.
-- John Kerry, testifying before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, April 22, 1971

I would think that if you understood what communism was, you would hope, you would pray on your knees that we would someday become communist.
The peace proposal of the Viet Cong is the only honorable, just, possible way to achieve peace in Vietnam.
-- Jane Fonda, speaking at Michigan State University during a fund-raising tour for AWOL GI's, Vietnam Veterans Against the War, and the Black Panther Party, November 22, 1970
------
My Lai was not an isolated incident but rather a way of life for many of our military.
-- Jane Fonda, speaking at VVAW's "Operation RAW" in Valley Forge, PA, September 7, 1970
------
Despite the "public relations" risk attendant on torturing [American] prisoners, the primary purpose for torturing them, especially in the North, was to obtain written and taped statements for use in the Communists' crucially important international propaganda war against the United States...
-- Henry Mark Holzer and Erika Holzer, from "Aid and Comfort, Jane Fonda in North Vietnam"
------
By Friday morning when we returned our medals, it was becoming an emotional thing. We discussed for a long time how we were going to return our medals... whether we'd drop them into shitcans filled with blood... or carry them up to Congress in body bags. Finally we decided the best way to show our contempt was by throwing them over the fence they'd put up in front of the Capitol steps.
-- Rusty Sachs, VVAW, in "The New Soldier"
