France Expels Imam Who Said Koran Allows Wife-Beating, AFP Says
By Alex Morales
April 20 (Bloomberg) -- French Interior Minister Dominique de Villepin will immediately expel to Algeria an imam who said that wife-beating is allowed by the Koran holy book, Agence France-Presse reported, citing a ministry statement.
Abdelkader Bouziane, an Algerian who preaches in Venissieux near the French city of Lyon, was detained today after midday, the agency said. Judicial proceedings may be taken against him, AFP said, citing the ministry.
Bouziane said in an interview with Lyon Mag that ``beating your wife is authorized by the Koran,'' according to AFP. He also said he hoped ``the entire world will become Muslim,'' the agency said.

I'm surprised France took a stand on this. Here's another article about same story:
French Imam Says Koran Allows Wife-Beating, France 2 Says
By Julian Nundy
April 20 (Bloomberg) -- A Muslim imam who preaches near the French city of Lyon said that wife-beating is allowed by the Koran holy book, drawing a call from the Justice Minister for judicial action against him, France 2 television reported.
Abdelkader Bouziane, who preaches in a mosque in the Lyon suburb of Venissieux, told Lyon Mag city magazine in an interview that he had several wives and ``beating your wife is authorized by the Koran.'' A member of the Salafist branch of Islam, which has a strict, literal interpretation of the Koran, Bouziane said he hoped ``the entire world will become Muslim.''
French Justice Minister Dominique Perben, speaking on France 2, said Bouziane must ``explain himself; justice can and must do something.'' Perben didn't say what steps could be taken against the imam.
The mayor of Venissieux, Andre Gerin, a Communist who has campaigned for the release of French nationals held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in the U.S. terrorist detention camp, said he will lodge a complaint against Bouziane, France 2 said. Other Muslims in his town had expressed ``their desire to replace the imam as soon as possible,'' France 2 cited Gerin as saying.

So, is France passing judgement on the koran or just someone's interpretation of the koran?
Seems like a serious dodging of the real issue here to take umbrage at one imam's teaching and then leave the supposed authority of that teaching untouched.

I would found it more amusing if they turned him over to the 'tolerant' leftists at NOW.

I have never read the koran, nor do I have a desire to do so, but I would like to see what this Iman was referencing. I could be wrong, but I find it hard to believe that wife beating is condoned by even this religion. Is this another example of extremist hijacking of Islam, or is it really part of Islam?
If anyone replies, please cite a passage, not just opinion.
FYI, I am not sympathetic to a group of people who through silence condone the violence extremists are practicing. But I also do not wish to color 1/3 of the worlds population as evil when 10% of them seem to be the malcontents.

He may have gotten a pass if he had limited his remarks to the beating of Christians and Jews.

I'm surprised they took a stand too, who'da thunk France would do ANYthing useful and right.

I suggest you check out "Ask the Imam". See if you can find anything there.
I was just reading up on Talaaq. From what I can gather once this word is said the woman is fivorced from her Muslim hubby.
I'm not sure about beating but I'm pretty sure that a Muslim man raping a muslim woman is not OK. Unless the woman is his wife. The it is. Rape of non-muslims is just fine I think in some situations.
Go to this this site. It is not a joke site. Basically, to me, it proves that some if not most of these people are insane. Islam is servitude.

Here is what the Qur'an says:
[4.34] Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.
In fairness, for an alternative view (and various excuses and dissimulations) see:

I haven't read the Koran and haven't the time to wade through a translation. But I'm not in the least surprised if wife beating can be interpreted from reading it. The Koran does gibe instructions for hygene, rules of banking and lending (business), rules of marriage to non-Muslims and the treatment of non-Muslims, treatment of slaves, etc. Imams all over the place say that the 3,000 people killed on 9/11 don't matter since they are infidels. That's worse than wife beating any day.

France has dug an Islamic hole from which, I'm afraid, there will be no climbing out of....2010 or 2015, French police will be fighting Muslims in the streets.

". Basically, to me, it proves that some if not most of these people are insane. Islam is servitude."
Interesting comment, I believe that technically insane is a legal term meaning the inability to know right from wrong and conform your behaviour accordingly, if judged by American ideas of right and wrong they may indeed be insane. The real problem is that they have surrendered the right to make their own judgements about anything important, "Islam is servitude", indeed.

Given the country's history, I'm very surprised the French didn't simply allow the guy to take over and install a sympathetic government.
