[history]
"The U.N.'s mechanisms for controlling Oil-for-Food contracts were inadequate, transparency went by the wayside, and effective internal review of the program did not occur. . . . If the United Nations cannot be trusted to run a humanitarian program, its other activities, including peacekeeping, arms inspection regimes or development projects may be called into question."

This would be a good opportunity to extend the turnover date. "Gosh, we really wanted to but this is a sensitive issue for the Iraqi people who suffered so under Saddam. And now with the shadow of scandal hanging over the U.N., it would be unfair to put the Iraqi people in the awkward position of questioning their integrity in setting up a government. An investigation should be put on the fast track and while they're at it, we'll continue to round up the bad guys in and around Iraq. So it would behoove those who want us to expedite the turnover to join in and cooperate with the U.N. investigation."

No question the U.N. can't be trusted as peacekeepers. They tucked tail and run when the truck bomb exploded at the gates of the U.N. building in Iraq not too many months ago.

In addition to the fact that we pay 25% of the UN budget, the UN is also looking to "borrow" a few billion, at no interest, from the US, topay for rehabbing their building and the cost of temporary housing during the construction process.. Ain't gonna happen...This is the type of issue that the House GOP will own..Kofi doesn't have a clue as to what is coming down the track at him..
