Apple upgrades its iBook laptop line

Like to carry around a notebook that delivers exceptional power at an affordable price? Then pick up an iBook G4. With a faster PowerPC G4 processor running at speeds up to 1.2GHz — optional DVD-burning SuperDrive, expanded memory capacity, advanced wireless networking capabilities, and the impressive stability provided by Mac OS X version 10.3 “Panther,” iBook G4 brings truly impressive performance to everyday life. And with pricing as low as $1099.

Slot-loading

Perfect for the activities you engage in each and every day — surfing the web, getting and sending email, chatting up a storm, doing your homework, playing games, listening to CDs, watching DVD movies, or creating your own musical compositions — iBook G4 fits snugly in your backpack and comfortably in your digital life.

Go Anywhere. Handle Anything.

iBook G4 offers an extra long battery life. Whether you choose the iBook with 12.1-inch or the 14.1-inch display, you’ll enjoy up to an incredible 6 hours of battery life. Many consumer notebooks offer you less than half that amount of battery life. Less than half. Not iBook G4. Thanks to the special energy-saving features built into the PowerPC G4 processor, the ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics processor, and Mac OS X Panther itself, iBook G4 consumes energy highly efficiently. Result: you can work much longer untethered.

14" specs12" specs

The lightest all-in-one consumer notebook on the market, the 12.1-inch iBook G4 weighs just 4.9 pounds. And the 14.1-inch model weighs just 5.9 pounds. Many textbooks weigh more than either one. Lightweight, iBook G4 is also thin — a svelte 1.35 inches to be exact — making this impressive notebook small enough to fit in a backpack and light enough to carry around all day.

Need performance?

You can order your iBook with either a 1GHz or a 1.2GHz PowerPC G4 processor with Velocity Engine and 512K Level 2 Cache. Can you say “speedy.” To maximize its speed, we pair the G4 processor with a fast 133MHz system bus and 256MB of onboard memory to accelerate calculations and make your applications scream. And you’ll also be glad to hear that you can boost memory capacity to a remarkable 1.25GB of memory. How many applications would you like to run at the same time?

All systems come well equipped. Roomy hard drives offer up to 60GB capacity. With iBook’s slot-loading Combo Drives you can watch DVDs, play music CDs, and burn your own data CDs and music CDs. And if you’d like to burn DVDs on the road, you can order your 14-inch iBook G4 with Apple’s impressive SuperDrive.

AirPort Extreme

AirPort Extreme comes built right into the 1.2GHz iBook G4 and is available as an option on other models.(2) You can also include an optional Bluetooth module for wireless connections to a wide range of peripheral devices. Built-in FireWire, USB 2.0, and a long list of other expansion options offer numerous communication and data transfer capabilities.

An impressive display

Both iBook models offer brilliant 1024-by-768-pixel resolution — ideal for doing everything from working on spreadsheets to displaying your movies and digital pictures in millions of colors. What’s more, the iBook display scales down beautifully, again with millions of colors, for special games and applications optimized for 800-by-600 or 640-by-480 pixel resolutions. And both come powered by an ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics processor with 32MB of dedicated video memory and AGP 4x support for dazzling 3D graphics that bring games to life.

Mac OS X - Panther

Mac OS X Panther

The iBook comes with Mac OS X version 10.3 “Panther,” Apple’s easy-to-use, next-generation operating system. Mac OS X Panther gives you over 150 new features, including Exposé (for making the most of the real estate on your screen), Fast User Switching (perfect for families who share one computer system), and FileVault (ironclad security for all the files on your hard disk). Naturally, you also get the Internet to go, with automatic networking to make connecting a snap: Mac OS X senses whether you’re connecting from home, school or the office — and configures your system automatically. And with Mac OS X’s Instant On feature, your iBook wakes from sleep instantly when you open it.

iLife

Enjoy the digital lifestyle

You’ll never run out of amazing things to do with your iBook. Especially since every iBook ships with the entire suite of iLife ’04 applications — iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto, GarageBand, and iDVD. Apple’s award-winning software suite lets you create your own music CDs, manage your digital photos, edit pro-quality movies, write your own music with drag-and-drop ease, and author DVD projects, too. What’s more, the entire suite works seamlessly together, so you can easily bring your photos into iMovie and songs from your iTunes music library into iMovie, iPhoto, and iDVD. You won’t find anything like it on a PC.

  1. Requires Apple Video Adapter, sold separately.
  2. Wireless Internet access requires AirPort Extreme Card, AirPort Extreme Base Station and Internet access (fees may apply). Some ISPs are not currently compatible with AirPort Extreme. Range may vary with site conditions.
  3. Compatible ISP and telephone services required. Your ISP may not support all v.92 features. Modem will function according to v.90 standards if v.92 services are not available. Actual modem speeds lower; speed depends on connection rate and other factors.

iBook Bump.

A great machine. I'm on my second one. Now using the 800 Mhz G4. Now that Apple has bumped up the max RAM on these machines to 1.25 GB they are an even more attractive alternative to the Powerbooks.

I strongly recommend the 12 inch iBook to any Freepers out there looking for a durable, fast, lightweight notebook. You can't go wrong with the iBook and OS X.

We're holding out for G5 iBooks for the wife and daughter, since they have about 18 months left on AppleCare.

The son (younger of two kids) may luck out and be the first recipient of a G5, since he has no computer of his own (poor baby).

Litany... younger kids are already used to "hand-me-downs"... give him YOUR G4 and get the G5 for your self! That's the way these things work.

DON'T SPOIL IT FOR THE REST OF US!!!

If you bothered to read Free Republic's posting policy, you'd know that advertising is prohibited: If we wanted to be inundated by Apple marketing crap, we'd go to their site.

As opposed to the dire threats to civilization posed by the (cough cough) Redmond Malfeasance.

Frankly, this was news to me.

Is the good news from Apple getting under your skin a wee little bit?

Hmm?

You'd think they'd PAY if they want to advertise here.

There are a goodly number of FReepers that support the site. I DON'T want to support somebody's company's ads. In fact, if this stuff is going to be posted, they ought to pay FR.

Product announcement my Aunt Fanny. I wonder what Apple would say if they got a bill for the advertising your palming off here, you FReeloader?

In fact, I wonder what Apple would say if they got some complaints by email?

Sorry for offending you. You may not like it but many Freepers use Macintoshes. This is an announcement of upgrades in a very popular line of laptops that even many PC users buy.

However, I have emailed the Admin moderator informing of the situation and if they find it unacceptable, asking them to remove what you find so objectionable.

Would Free Republic be interested in running certain ads on its website to defray its operating costs? It might be possible to have Freepers patronize certain shops or products and in exchange FR gets a share of the revenue. If we're going to be reviewing products here, we might as well get our share of the pie. Just a thought.

You didn't offend me, you made me angry. This isn't breaking news, if you want to talk about your MAC put it in chat. If you're a MAC salesman, you ought to know better.

I placed it under "announcements" not breaking news. I am not a Mac salesman. Why should you be angry. If you don't want to read a thread, ignore it.

Fine, That is your interpretation of it. I got it from an Apple News press release. I posted in the interests of an announcement for people who would be interested... Macintosh users. You are obviously not. So ignore it.

One of the nice things about Free Republic is that we can agree to disgree. I am certain that you and I will be on other threads and find we have a lot in common and in agreement. So, Judith Anne, it is nice to meet you.

As I mentioned, I have notified the Admin Moderator (which I think is Jim Robinson tonite, in fact, I just got an email from him on another matter) and asked if they had a problem with it, to remove it. That was a half hour or so ago and the thread is still here.

I'm an Apple junkie of Mac II vintage, and I think this is going a little far. I mean, consider the consequences; in retaliation, Redmond archimandrites will post Office 2004, er 2005, I mean 2006 product announcements (Uses four times as much disk space as Office 2001! Slower and more bloated than ever! Make your 4 GHz Pentium XIII chip behave like an 80286!)

Let's restrict ourselves to real news, which will usually be yet another Windoze security hole.

Hand-me-down approach every time a new one is bought guarantees the computer he gets only lasts 18 months. I prefer that everyone be "stuck" with their computer for 3 years, and then make the next leap.

Also, the son is in to heavy-duty gaming (admittedly not a high priority) and is getting into music bigtime (really important). If I handed down my 400 mhz PBG3 to him instead of giving it away to the in-laws, he could have done neither on it (WarCraft requires 500 mhz but preferably a gig, and GarageBand requires 667mhz.
