It makes perfect sense to me that Saddam's prized WMD would end up in "friendly" hands, most likely their Baathist "brothers" in Syria, and that Syria could permit these weapons to be deployed by al-queada. We should at once deliver an ultimatum to Syria that they first, turn over all WMD to the USA, and second, cooperate with unlimited inspection for WMD by the USA, or the USA will within five days declare war on Syria, period, end of story.

I agree, don't get me wrong.

but can you imagine what the left and the US media would do if seemingly out of the blue, Bush said "we are going to war with Syria because the WMD is there". After this whole Iraq WMD thing, I do not think Bush has enough support to make that case.

there has to be another way to make it happen, similar to what happened with Libya.

It's coming. I imagine foreign policy is going to stay front and center for the duration of this election cycle. Cynical? No. But I do believe timelines were reviewed by interested persons in the process of developing a strategy for victory over there. IE the timing of the transfer of power, the timing of the showdown with Al Sadr, all on the USA timetable. At least so far.
