Macomb prosecutor announces he will not run for re-election

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (AP) — Embattled Macomb County Prosecutor Carl Marlinga will not run for re-election in November, his office said Monday.

A spokesman for Marlinga told WDIV-TV in Detroit there were a number of reasons for Marlinga's decision, but acknowledged the ongoing federal grand jury probe of Marlinga and his failed 2002 congressional campaign was one of them.

The grand jury is investigating whether Marlinga traded prosecutorial favors for political contributions to his campaign. He testified in front of the grand jury twice earlier this month.

The federal investigation into Marlinga was triggered by complaints from Republicans who claimed Marlinga — a Democrat — intervened in an appeal filed by convicted rapist Jeffrey Moldowan in exchange for campaign contributions.

Marlinga later returned the contributions. He has repeatedly denied intervening in the appeal. Moldowan eventually was granted a new trial and acquitted.

Marlinga raised nearly $1 million in his 2002 campaign. He was defeated by Republican Rep. Candice Miller, who won 63 percent of the vote.

A BIG chance for Republicans to help turn the tide in this "Reagan Democrat" county of 800,000.

I forgot to call a press conference and announce I wouldn't be running also.
