The ‘So-Called’ Word

Everytime I read the press using the term ‘so-called’, a big red flag immediately goes up in my mind. The most common use of the ‘so-called’ adjective by the so-called journalists is “so-called” partial-birth abortion.

Why do they use it? Under the guise of objectivity, it’s their snide little way of letting everyone know that people deemed to be morally or culturally inferior refer to something by that particular terminology. Partial-birth abortion demands the ‘so-called’ adjective, because the term started in the pro-life crowd. And leaving the word ‘birth’ without ‘so-called’ exposes the humanity of the child and the real nature of this atrocity.

There are other uses of ‘so-called’ in the press. Add them to the thread if you like, but I prefer to suggest some uses of ‘so-called’ that I *wish* we would read more often. IMO, the best use of ‘so-called’ is when double-speak is obviously occurring, or when people are using very strained euphemisms.

So here are some ‘so-called’s I would like to see:

‘So-called’ gay marriage

‘So-called’ adult entertainment

‘So-called’ public radio

‘So-called’ moral relativism

‘So-called’ budget baselining

‘So-called’ liberal thinking (OK, maybe that last one isn’t so fair…)

IMHO there are Christians and there are "Christians". A "Christian" will see a homeless person shivering on a park bench and will say "I think they are cold" but will see that same person on the road to Hell and say "Who am I to judge?".
