Teens try to burn cross on man's lawn

Several teenagers were caught by an Elk, Wash., resident Sunday while trying to burn a cross in his front yard, the Spokane County Sheriff's Office said.

The man heard a noise outside his home Sunday morning in the 39000 block of North Hardesty Road and looked outside to see a cross on his front lawn, said sheriff's spokesman Cpl. Dave Reagan.

The man ran outside and saw three teenagers riding away from his home on bicycles, and two more teenagers approaching, Reagan said.

The resident stopped the two approaching teenagers and got the names of the three who had left. All are students at Riverside Middle School, Reagan said.

The wooden cross was about 4 feet tall, Reagan said. The teens had tried to ignite the cross, but were unsuccessful. ‘‘They tried to get it to burn but couldn't get it to go,” Reagan said.

The man is an American Indian, and has two adopted sons who are African American, Reagan said.

Reagan said an investigation into the incident is ongoing. No arrests have been made.

You know, where I live, a couple of loads of rocksalt fired from a shotgun has (for a long, long time) been a very effective dissuader of assorted two-legged pests.

Whatever happened to holding the parents responsible for the crimes of their children. To me, that is where this hatred came from to begin with. I say lock up the teenagers and their parents.

That's up there in the sticks, isn't it? Some of them are convinced that they should secede and form an all-white, all Christian (no Jews welcome) country on their own up there.

Maybe he could try a couple of webcams for his yard. The thought of live pics of these yahoos on the Internet might make them think twice. A silent motion detector could let the harried residents know when they have unwanted company.
