Fighting around Fallujah a Marine sniper's 'dream'
LA Times via Omaha World-Herald ^ | April 17th, 2004 | Unknown @ LA TIMES

FALLUJAH, Iraq - Taking a short breather Friday, the 21-year-old Marine corporal explained what it was like to practice his lethal skill in the battle for this city.

"It's a sniper's dream," he said. "You can go anywhere, and there are so many ways to fire at the enemy without him knowing where you are."

The role of snipers has become a significant tactic for Marines in this "Sunni Triangle" city. Marine experts say Fallujah is among the most "target-rich" battlefields for snipers since the World War II battle for Stalingrad, during which German and Russian snipers dueled for months.

In negotiations aimed at ending the standoff in the city, the insurgents have demanded that the Marines pull back their snipers.

A shaky truce exists between the Marines who surround the city and the fighters within the circle.

But the cease-fire allows the Marines to carry out defensive operations within the city, which, among other things, they define as allowing fire on insurgents who display weapons, break the curfew or move their forces toward U.S. troops.

One "good" thing about the Battle of Fallujah is that our Marine snipers will not have any future pangs of guilt about having to have killed two or three dozen "nice boys". The people being killed in Fajullah by our Marine snipers are definitely "bad guys" that need killing and our Marines feel good about their job......Polybius

U are a Doctor? Shame one you. Hun......Hun in the sun

Yes, I am a doctor and my medical career has included 20 years of active and reserve service as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy where it was my job to keep keep U.S. Marines such as these healthy so that they could kill the enemies of the United States that "needed killing".

You may find that he is and was an American before he became a physician

See Post 81.

We were U.S. Naval officers first and doctors second.

With all respect, Sir

No human beeing needs to be killed.

"I swear by Apollo and the physician, and Aesculapius, and Health, and All-heal, and all the gods and goddesses, that, according to my ability and judgement, I will keep this oath and this stipulation to reckon him who taught me this Art equally dear to me as my parents, to share my substance with him, and relive his necessities if required; to look upon his offspring in the same footing as my own brothers, and to teach them this art, if they shall wish to learn it, without fee or stipulation; and that by precept, lecture, and every other mode of instruction, I will impart a knowledge of the Art to my own sons, and those of my teachers, and to disciples bound by stipulation and oat according to the law of medicine, but to none others.

I will follow that system of regimen which, according to my ability and judgement, I consider for the benefit of my patients, and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous.

I will give no deadly medicine to any one if asked, nor suggest any such counsel; and in like manner I will not give to a woman a pessary to produce abortion. With purity and with holiness I will pass my life and practice my Art.

I will not cut persons laboring under the stone, but will leave this to be done by men who are practitioners of this work.

Into whatever houses I may enter, I will go into them for the benefit of the sick, and will abstain from every voluntary act of mischief and corruption; and, further from the seduction of females or males, of freemen and slaves.

Whatever, in connection with my professional practice or not, in connection with it, I see or hear, in the life of men, which ought not to be spoken of abroad, I will not divulge, as reckoning that all such should be kept secret.

While I continue to keep this Oath unviolated, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the art, respected by all men, in all times!

But should I trespass and violate this Oath, may the reverse be my lot"

You have sworn to heal humans.
Not to wish their killing.

He's not killing them. He's keeping our soldiers whole and well so THEY can kill them.

If he ran across a grievously wounded rag, he'd stop the bleeding and do everything he's trained to do. His oath extends that far. The medics in my dad's company in WWII patched up the occasional Kraut.

But his oath doesn't include wishing them well. His primary duty is to OUR men.

I wish people would quit feeling sorry for these scum. They DON'T fight by civilized rules and they have absolutely NO compunction about killing women, old people, and little children. Not to mention torture, etc.

Don't waste your pity on them. They can't appreciate it.

As a United States Naval medical officer, my oath is to protect and defend the United States of America against all enemies, both foreign and domestic, and not an oath to "Apollo Physician and Asclepius and Hygieia and Panaceia and all the gods and goddesses".

The Hippocratic Oath is an outdated classical relic that, if followed, would prohibit surgery.

"I will not use the knife, not even on sufferers from stone, but will withdraw in favor of such men as are engaged in this work."

In any case, however, the Hippocratic Oath has no prohibition on the waging of war.

I can think of many of your German countrymen that did "need to be killed". Unfortunately, they were not killed soon enough.

Sure wish I was there. Went through 2nd Mar Div scout/sniper school but never got to play in a big game.

The Corps was a different place then however, after Vietnam, patriotism was low, politics were liberal.

Remember people flipping me off when I'd wear my Dress Blues on leave.

Oh well, watcha gonna do.

If I had one of those Star Trek teleporters, I'd love to be on an Iraqi rooftop with the .50 for about two hours.

'Course, then I'd like to beam back in time to catch "Band of Brothers" on the History Channel.

You noticed that, huh?

Actually, he's ambidextrous in everything except shooting.

"The Corps was a different place then however,"

I know what you mean, Cap'n.
The Corps didn't change, but some of the American people made it rough to be a Marine for a little while.
I'm SOOO damn happy to see that turned around - at least, by most.

You have just declaired that your oath is outdated.

....this means... by my Eurowheenie logic....
...that Americans are barbarians?
