A holy war of sorts is heating up in a Detroit suburb, where members of the local Muslim community want loudspeakers on mosques to announce the Islamic call to prayer five times each day.
But the idea is running into opposition from other residents of Hamtramck, Mich., many of whom are Christian, who think the prayer calls as early as 6 a.m. and as late as 10 p.m. would be disruptive.
"When you call to prayer, you are proselytizing, and as a citizen of the United States I don't want to hear it," Bob Golen, 68, told the Detroit Free Press.
"It is not my God. My God is Jesus Christ," Caroline Zarski, 81, said. "I don't want this noise invading my home at 10 p.m."
The Al-Islah Islamic Center asked the city three months ago to alter its noise ordinance to allow the calls to prayer. In February, the council reportedly supported the change but sought a public hearing before making any change.
"We don't want to make it a big deal," said businessman Abdul Algazali, according to the Free Press. "It's a low-pitched voice. It's not going to wake up anybody."

Go back home To America? I haven't seen this much religious fascism since Saudi Arabia.

" For the same reason that atheists are forced to listen to Christian prayers in public schools..."
???? I know of no public schools that allow Christian prayer in either classroom, lunchroom, or assembly.
And frankly, I don't want to hear a moslem call to prayer. I haven't heard church bells since I was a child, and no church in our area calls to service with them since everything is built post-60's style glass and concrete.

Stop all immigration from Islamic countries now.
We are at war!
Call to prayer my a##. That's their call to jihad.
Where are all the so called "peaceloving muslims" speaking out against the violence going on in the old country??

'...I haven't seen this much religious fascism since Saudi Arabia'.
The koran is a meaningless jumble of verses unless understood in the context of the life of the 'prophet' - if you have not read 'The Life of Muhammad' you will never understand anything about islam or the mindset of this cunning madman.
The biography I recommend was published in 1913 and is available as a FREE BOOK on:
http://muhammadanism.org/Canon_Sell/default.htm It's a profoundly well researched work that includes the ancient arabic sources in the footnotes.
Read this and then tell us what you think religious fascism is and where you might find it.
To: Fred Nerks
Read this and then tell us what you think religious fascism is and where you might find it. I found it in Saudi Arabia, and now I'm finding it in America, perpetrated by the same people who denounce Muslim religious fascism.
It appears your source for Islamic knowledge is from reading anti-Islam works written by people who think like you. Have you read any of the Muslim works?

Stop all immigration from Islamic countries now. A while ago Protestants in America were saying the same thing about Catholicism. The mass influx of Catholics was ruining our country.
Where are all the so called "peaceloving muslims" speaking out against the violence going on in the old country?
They exist, and threads about them have been on FR. I have a few guesses for those who don't. Either they're like average non-activist Christians who just their lives and don't speak out on issues (like the majority Christians who don't crusade against abortion). They voice dissent, but only to their friends and family. Or they're playing head-in-the-sand. Or they secretly support them and are only pretending to be loyal Americans.

"THINK ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!"
Think about what? How many Muslims are in Congress right now?

"It is not my God. My God is Jesus Christ," Caroline Zarski, 81, said. "I don't want this noise invading my home at 10 p.m." Translation: I'm all for freedom of religion as long as it's mine.
Nope!
Real translation, "I'm all for freedom of religion, as long as YOUR religion isn't forced into my home!
This would be NO different than Christian (or any other) religious TV or radio programming, if you couldn't turn it off! The fact is that if they're going to use loudspeakers to broadcast the call to prayers, that WILL invade the privacy of people in their homes. A better way to go would be to have the mosque buy a radio station, and have the worshipers keep their radios on in their homes and cars.

THEY can go back from whence they came and broadcast away! I wonder if the Indians are saying that about church bells.
I wonder just how many churches are ringing their bells at 6:00AM or 10:00PM?

'It appears your source for Islamic knowledge is from reading anti-Islam works written by people who think like you...'
The biography I recommended to you to read was written by Edward, Canon Sell, a Fellow of the University of Madras and published in 1913. The extensive footnotes include numerous arabic sources. As I said in my previous post, this is a profoundly well-researched work of an HISTORICAL nature. The Author shows not bias what-so-ever.
Not that you will ever understand what that means.
To: Fred Nerks
The Author shows not bias what-so-ever. Hearing that from someone who abhors Islam calls into question what you'd consider unbiased on the subject.
To: MarkL
"I'm all for freedom of religion, as long as YOUR religion isn't forced into my home! Oh, you mean like those anti-sodomy, anti-porn and anti-sex toy laws? Okay, we agree.
The fact is that if they're going to use loudspeakers to broadcast the call to prayers, that WILL invade the privacy of people in their homes.
If you'd read more, you'd see I don't think they should be able to do it either.

'...hearing that from someone who abhors Islam calls into question what you'd consider unbiased on the subject...'
I am simply offering you the same opportunity to learn as I did. This is just one book I read after 9/11 in an attempt to understand the roots of this belief system. I found it in the library belonging to an elderly relative.
I have read much else on the topic in the last few years of course, but nothing as UNBIASED and historically sourced as this particular work.
It's no skin off my nose if you don't read it.

Ok
our country is based on Judeo-Christian morals.
Our country is 95% Christian.
We have built this country on those values and have welcomed others (different religions and different cultures into our home and have given them santuary) We have told these people that they can worship their God and retain their cultures BUT they must live according to our laws.
This is NOT a bad deal.
In other countries people die because of their faith. Not in America.
But something UGLY is happening..... a GUEST in my home is trying to make demands which are not acceptble.
They want to take over my home !!!
NO !!!... NOTTA !!!...
These people have confused kindness with weakness...
They have gone to far.

And if you had bothered to read anything that I posted, you would have seen NOTHING BUT WHAT I HAD REFERRED TO IN THIS CASE i.e. the only thing I posted was in regards to loudspeakers broadcasting calls to prayers!
Jeez!
