Yeah, that would not go over in my neighborhood! Those speakers would be taking damage on a fairly regular basis.

"When you call to prayer, you are proselytizing, and as a citizen of the United States I don't want to hear it."

Their reply will be: "How about church bells? Those too are rung before masses, and can be heard throughout a city." I wouldn't want to hear that wailing either, but be ready for the ACLU to call for a halt to bells pealing as it would offend atheists.

I hope if the measure passes, the residents there will use those loudspeakers as bullseyes for target practice.

That loudspeaker should meet with daily sabotage if this is approved. Won't say anything else as I don't want to become a suspect!

There's really a very simple solution to this, that doesn't offend anyone's religious sensibilties:

Let them use a low powered radio station to broadcast their call for prayer 5 times a day, with hardwired receivers in every Moslem's house (at their own expense of course) that automatically come on when the signal is transmitted, blast their caterwallering through the Moslem house, and go dormant until the next call.

Anything heard outside will be subject to the law against public nuisance and noice pollution.

It's not going to wake up anybody

Then why bother with it? If it's just for ceremony then do it inside.

no, because if you silence these voices, you will allow the ACLU to stop Christian church bells, including bells that play hymns.

I didn't realize why the bells were important until I went to Africa. Our mass was 8 am so at 7 am they rang to alert people, and then rang again at the start of Mass. People didn't have clocks, and this was to alert them so they could get there on time.

Traditionally, they also ring at daybreak/6am, noon, and dusk/5pm for "the angeles" (a prayer about Christ's incarnation that starts "the angel of the lord declared unto mary)---there is a famous French painting called the Angeles, showing two people in a wheat field praying.

Our problem is that Christians don't stop to pray five times a day....in public.

This is incredible. Tell them to keep their religion inside their homes and mosques. Why do we need to be subjected to this offensive practice? Is there anyone who does not agree that the immigration policies have gone over the edge? We are destroying the fabric of America, be it in Southern States where English has become the second language, Kalifornia and the liberal Eastern States where gay marriage is being brewed up, and now this influx of Islam. If we must bring in more, can't we at least bring in more Christians?

This has a very simple solution.

Print the prayer schedule on a 3 x 5 card, and distribute it to all the muslims.

Prayer Schedule:

6am - 10am - 2pm - 6pm - 10pm (or whatever)

Reminder: Be on time or the Mullah/Imam will kill you.

"We don't want to make it a big deal," said businessman Abdul Algazali, according to the Free Press. "It's a low-pitched voice. It's not going to wake up anybody."

Then why do you need the speakers?

Being stationed in Turkey, I hear this all the time. It IS very loud. I don't think the speakers would last very long in the States. Hearing it gets old.

The WORST times to hear it is when a) you are golfing, and b)in the early morning when hung over.

The Islamic prayer is designed to reinforce the claim that this location is Muslim territory. Whether a neighborhood or a nation. It's all about claiming more turf for Allah

The Al-Islah Islamic Center asked the city three months ago to alter its noise ordinance to allow the calls to prayer. In February, the council reportedly supported the change but sought a public hearing before making any change.

"We don't want to make it a big deal," said businessman Abdul Algazali, according to the Free Press. "It's a low-pitched voice. It's not going to wake up anybody."

City Council President Karen Majewski compared the call to prayer to bells ringing on Christian churches, though other residents were said to disagree at Tuesday's meeting.

Majewski says the loudspeaker measure is likely to pass at next week's meeting, and would subsequently take effect in late May.

"Petitions have circulated among mainly white and Christian members of the community for weeks asking the council not to amend the ordinance," said Councilman Scott Klein. "Both sides have issued threats of federal lawsuits based on the constitutionality of the ban or the removal of the ban."

Several points - first, it's not a religious issue as some on both sides of this thing want to paint it. It's literally a matter of disturbing the peace.

Local residents didn't sign leases and mortgages to be subjected to undue noise, especially at off the wall hours. This is no different than the opposition that would occur if a new airport or factory were suddenly built in this suburb. The noise is not warranted nor desired, period.

And the rocket scientist who is trying to make this a racial issue ("Petitions have circulated among mainly white and Christian members of the community for weeks asking the council not to amend the ordinance," said Councilman Scott Klein.) sounds like he's more concerned with not "hurting feelings" and "being tolerant."

Well, there is a line to tolerance, and that ends at the homes of citizens. Nitwit politicians, would-be do-gooders and religious fundamentalists (of all stripes) have no right to invade the homes of people uninvited. This "call to prayer" measure would do exactly that -- invade peoples' homes.

I would be opposed to it even it were a Christian church desiring to ring bells at all hours of the day or night.

Double-barrelled Mega-PING! to both lists! If you want on, FReepmail me!

What a great idea! The more annoying the loud speakers are the less they'll be able to recruit. The townsfolk will soon enough rectify the city council seating.
