Wagner tops list of music not to play while driving(Ride of the Valkyries)

London-AP -- Head-banging heavy metal music may be o-k to listen to while driving -- but stay away from some of the older classical stuff.

Britain's R-A-C Foundation has named Richard Wagner's (VAHG'-nurz) fast-paced "Ride of the Valkyries" (VAL'-keer-eez) as the top tune not to listen to while behind the wheel -- because it says research shows loud music can cause accidents.

Three modern songs also made the top five, including "Firestarter" by the Prodigy.

The foundation also provided a top-five list of songs that can be played safely while driving -- though it cautions the volume should be kept down.

That list includes the Norah Jones hit "Come Away with Me."

[Elmer Fudd voice] Be still my wuv....

Yep. that's great stuff. However, among the best of the Warner Bros. cartoon soundtracks, Hillbilly Hare is surely near the top of the list:

BUGS: (Singing.)
Promenade across the floor,
Sashay right on outa the door.
Out the door and into the glade,
And everybody promenade.

(Bugs prances outside, fiddling for all he's worth.)

BUGS: (Singing.)
Step right up, you're doin' fine,
I'll pull your beard, you pull mine.
Yank it again, like you did before,
Break it up with a tug o' war.

*************

There's lots more, but I'm sure you remember it.

Gotta love Rhapsodie Rabbit, too.

Yes, but can you can you get a solid C sharp in the bass clef? ;-)

(I was singing the bass part in Franck's Psalm 100 on Sunday because we were short on basses . . . I'm happy as a tenor but really NOT as a bass. It makes my throat feel funny. :-( )

My daughter and I have a great deal of fun singing the duet "Bei Männern welche Liebe fühlen" because Papageno really is a baritone. (I can't manage Sarastro.) Daughter is actually a lyric soprano, even though she can nail those Fs she's very breathy up there. Don't know what son is going to be yet, too early to tell, but there's a strong line of basses in the family on my side.

There are a few AC/DC tracks that'll have the cops giving chase, too. Thunderstruck is one that comes to mind.

Even the Country-Western and Bluegrass genres offer great driving music. Orange Blossom Special is a great tune, especially from someone like Charlie Daniels.

When warming up and in full chest voice, yes. I can get a couple notes lower, but really, I'm a natural first soprano.

And yes, I have a tendency to drive at tempo.

Holy cats! You've got a heck of a range! And our choirmaster was surprised when I got all the way from C sharp in the basement to B above the staff . . . although I'm even breathier up there (not to say squeakier) than my daughter. I told him any note above the treble clef is like a bank account with me . . . I get overdrawn really, really quick! :-D

A friend of mine actually caused a collision on an interstate entrance ramp because she put it to the floor while listening to Ravel's Bolero.

The wife will not allow any Iron Maiden in the car for that reason. My only speeding ticket came during "Aces High" - 83mph in a 65-zone. Nice cop, though - I was doing 97 :-)

"Rock You Like a Hurricane" - The Scorpions

"Burn in Hell" - Twisted Sister

"Rock and Roll" - Led Zeppelin (makes me wish I had a Cadillac)

"Back in Black" - AC/DC

"I Can't Drive 55" - Sammy Hagar

"Under Pressure" - ZZ Top

"Fever" - Garth Brooks

I also found myself listening to the "Ride of the Rohirrim " selection from the "Lord of the Rings" sound track while driving and visualizing smashing into a horde of orcs or lazy, tax-leeching Caltrans workers.
