Sept. 11 Highlights
Associated Press
Highlights of Wednesday's Sept. 11 commission hearing on intelligence and law enforcement issues related to the 2001 terror attacks.
GORELICK
_House Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner, D-Wis., said commission member Jamie Gorelick should step down because of a memo she wrote as deputy attorney general during the Clinton administration. The memo regarded the "wall" separating FBI criminal and intelligence operations. Gorelick says she will not step down.
INTELLIGENCE FAILURES
_The CIA and other intelligence agencies tracked the rise of al-Qaida but never fully appreciated the threat it posed to the United States or the intense interest in using aircraft in terror plots, according to a commission staff report.
CIA REBUILDING
_CIA Director George Tenet said it would take five more years to fully rebuild the agency's clandestine service to infiltrate terror cells and recruit informants overseas. The eavesdropping National Security Agency and other intelligence agencies are also years away from being on proper footing, Tenet said.
FBI OVERHAUL
_FBI Director Robert Mueller listed a number of reforms he said would focus the FBI more sharply on counterterrorism and vastly improve its intelligence and information-sharing capabilities. Mueller urged the panel not to recommend creation of a separate domestic intelligence agency, raising concern about constitutional rights and civil liberties.
FBI CHALLENGES
_The commission staff issued a statement saying the FBI reform efforts face a number of challenges, including field office confusion and resistance, inadequate training and a shortage of translators and linguists. Intelligence analysts, the report said, are still relegated to second-class status and sometimes have to act as receptionists or empty trash cans.

I thought "Gorelick" was Tipper's job?
That is a sick picture, I'm still shaking from disgust. Gore has a mouth like a lamprey. Is this the kiss Gore is famous for?

I've also read here that she has been defending the Clinton administration behind closed doors when they have been discussing the evidence.
This amounts to obstruction.

I could have screamed when Kean called her one of the least partisan and most effective members of the committee. Gag me.

She ain't going anywhere folks. It doesn't appear so. We have to keep the pressure on. We are the people they serve and it is very much our business. Matthews bringing up Tenet's breakfast again. I'd like to know where all these inquiring minds were after OKC and flight 800.

"keep the pressure on"......
I have emailed and phoned so much that I probably won't be able to pay my phone bill....lol....Altho I am doing this morning, noon, and night....I don't think it's going to help. I hope I am wrong. This panel is a joke. Think back to Clinton's impeachment showtrial. The media/dims provided cover for his sorry ass and I think that this will happen here, too.
As I speak, the idiot mathews has the Jersey widders ON AGAIN and they are saying that it's a shame that the terrorist now know that Bush takes vacations in August and we have tipped them off and hopes the commission does something about this. Mathews tells them how far they have come and all the answers they are getting from this panel. gag gag gag..... What these idiots don't realize is that the terrorist are hearing all of this information. If they had their way...they would declassify everything in their attempts to get Bush. It's sick. I can't take it any longer...am leaving my friends house.

AH HA! Well that is curious. She can't stay on the Commission, that is for sure. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

What is this "resign" nonsense? And "request" bull? She was selected by the dem leadership, right? She should be fired.
To: joinedafterattack
Gorelick says she will not step downAll righty, then. That puts an end to that. Media moves on to other things.
Or maybe they can get Bush to apologize to her for all the fuss.
To: jocon307
She can't stay on the Commission, that is for sure.Pressure for her to resign will not reach sufficient strength unless the so-called mainstream media make an issue of it. So far, I don't see that happening, and I'm not holding my breath expecting it to.
By the way, I wonder how many FReepers have paid attention to how this is playing on their local TV news. The vast majority of Americans who pay any attention to news still get it from their local TV news outlets.
Here in Southern California, when they aren't yammering about the latest celebrity gossip, or showing the latest car chase, or breathlessly telling us that it's going to be sunny again tomorrow, they are giving very, very negative skewed-to-the-Left coverage of Iraq and the 9/11 hearings. (They even seem to have gotten bored with Arnold lately. All that stuff about running the state government about threatened to make their coifed, powdered, empty heads explode, I guess.)

And I thought Ben-Venista was the premier democrat HACK on the commission. She makes him look principled.

Why is she so stubbornly staying? Only reason I can come up with is that she is in charge of defending the Clinton "
"legacy".

"Absolutely! She should disclose the directives she received to write that memo, by whom is obvious." Gorelick knows the true reason for the "wall"...
Everthing Clinton did was to protect Clinton. I suggest that Clinton wanted to restrict info sharing between FBI and CIA in order to protect investigations into potential criminal cases regarding his actions and the actions of his close friends. The "gag order" was Clinton's way to limit investigation into his affairs...why else would agents be threatened with their careers?
Perhaps Freepers can connect the dots and recall what investigations into Clinton would have been advanced had the FBI and CIA shared info. (Chinagate for one?)
It was always about Clinton.
