A woman shot an armed man to death Tuesday after he attacked her as she was entering her east-side Detroit home, police said.
The woman, who owns a car dealership, was at the side door of her home in the 15200 block of Troester at 7:45 p.m. when a man ran up behind her brandishing a nickel-plated handgun, Officer Derek Jones said.

The gun was loaded and being carried in her purse? Is this legal in Detroit?
She does have a CCW permit but you never know in the bigger (usually liberal) cities.

One does have to wonder though, why do the police carry guns? Maybe they're 'loaners' in case a perp loses his own.

This is the second Detroit woman with a CCW who was saved by her own gun.
The other one was posted here on FR. The woman was going up to an ATM when a man with a gun approached her. She pulled her gun and them man fled.

Dear Cynicom,
The perp in this case wanted to first rape, then kill this women, then steal her valuables. Most people find it difficult to call 911 when they are dead.
This women, and in fact all Americans have the established right to life and liberty, rights that this man was attempting to deny through use of illegal force. Since it is not possible for the police to be in every home, citizens have the legal right to defend themselves. This is why my state (Michigan) not only upholds the second amendment, but goes the extra step in allowing citizens the right to carry concealed weapons.
In those states where gun ownership is restricted crime increases substantially. In those areas where gun ownership is allowed, crime goes down substantially.
Why should this women, or any person allow themselves to be an "ordinary citizen" when in this case ordinary would also mean beaten, raped and dead?

Detroit police said citywide, at least eight people were shot in less than four hours Tuesday night. At least four of them were killed in the incidents which included a carjacking and an incident police said was drug related. [completing the sentence] ... ,and thanks to this woman's gun ownership, at least one of those shootings didn't have an innocent victim.

The perp in this case wanted to first rape, then kill this women Knowing how things are these days, maybe not even in that order.
To: Dan from Michigan
I want to thank you for your efforts in passing the CCW law in Michigan. You are personally responsible for helping to save this woman's life.
Again, thank you.

Thankfully, my brother is very right thinking. However, if he woke up one day chanting guns are bad, he would not be welcome at my house.

The carry law was passed in 2001. Dan from Michigan was part of the fight to pass it. Freepers have been actively involved in passing CCW laws for the last four years that I know of. We have had the live feeds from the legislative floors right here on FR.
Right now, the Kansas CCW bill has been passed by both houses and sent to the Governor. She has vowed to veto it in spite of calls in our favor by 3-1.

"He said, 'I got you,"' Jones said. She tried to shut her screen door, but he pulled it open and began shoving her into the house, police said. As they struggled, she pulled a handgun from her purse and fired about five shots, Jones said.

Expected veto of concealed gun bill won't face override try, sponsor says
By Bill Draper - Associated Press Writer
Wednesday, April 14, 2004
Topeka A House sponsor of concealed-handguns legislation that has been sent to the governor says there will be no attempt to override an expected veto of the measure.
Rep. L. Candy Ruff said Tuesday there are not enough votes to override Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' threatened veto, so there's no reason to try.
"We'll wait until next year and bring it back," said Ruff, D-Leavenworth. "This is the type of issue that doesn't go away, because it's that important. Forty-six states have already passed this legislation, so it's not unusual, odd or weird."
The House approved its version of the bill on a 78-45 vote -- six favorable votes short of the 84 needed to override a veto. The House would get first shot at overriding a veto, since the bill originated in that chamber.
Sebelius spokeswoman Nicole Corcoran said the governor has been very clear that she would support legislation allowing retired law enforcement officers -- but no one else -- to carry concealed handguns. The current bill "is not something the governor will support," Corcoran said Tuesday.
Under Kansas law, Sebelius has 10 days to act on a bill once it has reached her desk or it automatically becomes law without her signature. Sebelius' deadline on the concealed-carry bill is Friday, the same day the 2004 Governor's Annual One-Shot Turkey Hunt begins in El Dorado.
The bill on the governor's desk would require the attorney general's office to issue a concealed-carry permit to any Kansan 21 or older who is a U.S. citizen, pays a $150 application fee, has no mental illness or drug or alcohol addiction and completes eight hours of training.
The legislation prohibits concealed handguns in several locations but would allow them in the Statehouse, school parking lots and restaurants that serve alcohol.
Ruff said the fate of concealed-carry next year could depend on who gets elected to the Legislature this November and how strongly supporters feel about passing the measure -- even if it means Democrats having to oppose their Democratic governor.
"I do think that on this issue Democrats have got to realize there are some things you've got to stand up for," Ruff said. "You have to stand up and say despite everything else, ma'am, you're not right on this issue."

I looked it where on a map this was. Not far from Gratiot St. Gratiot is rough by Detroit standards.
And a big reason for CPL's.
