"Mr. Dickerson's question about his "biggest mistake" appeared to catch the president off guard.
"I wish you'd have given me this written question ahead of time so I could plan for it," he said, drawing laughter for the first time in the tense East Room."
What's the matter with Bush advisers? Why didn't someone prepare him to answer this question? He didn't have to give a truthful response, just an answer, any answer, so as to confuse the enemy. He looked very foolish with his response. Heads should roll for crying out out!!!

"I wish you'd have given me this written question ahead of time so I could plan for it," he said, Isn't it commonly accepted that this is how Mrs. Clinton conducts "interviews"? She demands the questions be presented first.

He looked very foolish with his response. Heads should roll for crying out out!!! I didn't think he looked foolish at all. In fact, I took his response as thoughtful, honest and had shown modesty.
Here's a man that is President of the United States, showing the traits I listed above, that we all so dearly missed during the Clinton years. Foolish? Nope. Clinton was the one that looked foolish.

The President never looked better. An open, honest man who stands in sharp contrast to the glibness, sharkskin suits and outdated JFK haircuts of the pitiful, cowardly cut-and-run DemocRats.
Buck up, newbie. It's a long road between now and November and IMHO, President Bush will prevail quite handily.

Why didn't someone prepare him to answer this question? He handled it perfectly. If he said he made no mistakes he is dead. If he says he made a mistake, even one he is dead. He had to look humble, sincere and resolute about the mission.
A proper response required him to be anything but smooth.

He answered it precisely as he should have. He is comfortable with ALL of the decisions that he made. If he received incorrect information, he cannot be faulted for a decision made using any flawed data.

I disagree with you. GWB is not slick, we have had slick and don't want it. He is honest, thoughtful, at times can be taken aback. I love the man. He is decent. Decent people sometimes stumble in the glare of the press. I don't think this was a stumble. The thought that he would fire someone for his small awkwardness is unthinking,,GWB is not that kind of man.

"...any answer, so as to confuse the enemy"
and by "the enemy" I assume you're referring to the anti-American leftists and their supporters in the press corps.

This is a trick question (eg. "When did you stop beating your wife?"). No matter how he answers it, the reporter gets a damaging headline:
1) Bush claims perfection; "I made no mistakes", says Bush.
2) Bush admits his mistakes caused 9/11 attacks.
3) Bush evades tough questions, refuses to admit mistakes.
I thought he did the best he could under the circumstances by postponing the answer.

It's not that big of a deal. Everyone knows Bush doesn't excel at unplanned speaking. He nailed the questions he'd rehearsed.
