Toxin Ricin Found in Wash. Man's Apartment

ASSOCIATED PRESS

SEATTLE (AP) - A 37-year-old man is in FBI custody for allegedly possessing the deadly toxin ricin.

Robert M. Alberg of Kirkland, Wash., was arrested at his apartment Friday for investigation of one count of possession of a biological agent or toxin.

"It is enough that it could cause concern that it could harm someone - could kill someone," FBI spokeswoman Roberta Burroughs told KING-TV on Monday.

Agents said they believe Alberg was making the ricin in his apartment but won't disclose how much was found. They also would not say what they believe he was going to do with the poison.

I was wondering ( I probably should nkow) if there are any major chemical labs schools in the Seattle area. Could be a dweeb "practicing" and somebody turned him in...but I think there's more to it.

Maybe he was involved in the G8 distrubances in a while back and the FBI had been watching.

Good catch! Same name I would say...the link refers to the intiials "RMA" so it looks like a match.

Guy seem skinda wacky with "... my WIFE WANTED SIGN in my window..." on his website.

Maybe he couldn't get lucky so he decided to make ricin.

OK, breaking, breaking!

PI

"Alberg was held pending a hearing Thursday in U.S. District Court. He is described in court documents as having autism, a complex brain disorder best known for interfering with a person's ability to communicate and interact with others. Symptoms range from mild to severe.

Federal criminal justice sources told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer they do not believe Alberg had political motivations for making the ricin and had no plans to use it.

Alberg's father, Tom, is the managing director of Madrona Venture Group, a Pacific Northwest venture capital firm. An early investor in Amazon.com, Alberg continues to sit on the board of the Seattle online retailer. A former lawyer with the Perkins Coie firm, Alberg served as executive vice president of McCaw Cellular.

In a statement issued Monday, Tom Alberg said "the family is cooperating fully with authorities." It goes on to say that "we understand the seriousness of the issues involved. We also appreciate authorities' sensitivity to Robert's obvious medical and psychological conditions."

Agents believe the man was making the ricin in his apartment on a relative's property but won't say how much was found.

The criminal investigation of Alberg began in November when an employee of the Sheffield Seed Co. in Locke, N.Y. warned the FBI in New York that Alberg had ordered 5 pounds of castor seeds, a key ingredient in making ricin. Because the company considered the order very unusual, it alerted the FBI. In December, the seeds were mailed to Alberg.

A spokesman at the Seattle FBI office said late Monday night that Burroughs was not available for additional comment."
