The bestseller at the center of a national debate on America's security, "Against All Enemies: Inside America's War on Terror," may soon be hitting the silver screen.
Sony Pictures has optioned the film rights to former counterterrorism official Richard Clarke's book, which questions the country's readiness to address potential terrorist threats before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The project will be produced by John Calley, a veteran Hollywood executive who stepped down as the studio's chief executive and chairman last year.
Clarke last month testified at the commission investigating the Sept.11 attacks and said the Bush White House did not consider terrorism an urgent matter in the months before hijackers crashed commercial airliners into the World Trade Center and Pentagon (news - web sites). The White House launched a counterattack to refute the charge.
Clarke, who worked in the administrations of Presidents Bill Clinton (news - web sites) and George W. Bush, retired last year.

How cinematic could Clarke's book be? How do you make a movie about bureacratic memos? Sounds more like a method for Hollywood to pay off Clarke for services rendered.

How cinematic could Clarke's book be... well, let's see,... how about a drooling, psychotic, borderline-retard President who is shamelessly manipulated by his reptilian vice-presdient who can barely take time away from his white Christian fundamentalist oil cronies (too busy oppressing womyn, minorities and endangered species for profit dontcha know....) to listen to a poor but honest career security academic.
...and how's about if the the President is just too stupid to recognize any threat presented by the gentle yet noble career security expert. and how's about the security expert's desperate attempts to get the President's attention so that his eloquent warnings might'save the children'...
I can see it now...

Option means nothing. And they would be nuts to seriously consider this soon-to-be-dated material for a movie. This is more news-making-itself--in other words, more leftie propaganda.

I was going to say that it IS a work of fiction.

Standard Clintanizs' M.O.
We'd see a film classic of the boy president's Second Coming, except that was in the Oval Office.

Can we develop a part for the Vice President's daughter, a sympathetic gay character?

Except that they apparently already have a producer in line, I'd agree. I've seen options for books I like expire after years with no movie. But then I've seen them expire, only to be sold to someone else who actually wants to make a movie.
If you're rich, buying options is one way to make sure a book doesn't turn into a movie.

But what does "producer in line" really mean? If there's no contract, other than the option, I seriously doubt this one.
