If someone is seen carrying a weapon and is not readily identifiable as a member of the Iraqi Police he is then a hostile combatant and should be treated as such.

Your comment has been rattling around in the back of my head for quite some time, slightly modified.

Anyone carrying an RPG round or launcher is de facto the enemy and deserves to be terminated. Period. End of discussion.

And as for wholesale levelling of Fallujah...you're quite right. We are taking out the enemy right now without slaughtering civilians. I won't call them innocents, but they are non-combatants and as such deserve some sort of mercy. I guess that's just our 'good guys in white hats' way of doing things.

They don't deserve the mercy that we give, but as you say, that's our "white hat" way of doing things, and I wouldn't want to change into a black hat. The troops will come home someday, and they'll need to be proud of, not haunted by, what they do over there. So they don't get the mercy because they deserve it, but rather because we deserve and must give it to them in order to remain who we are.
