They can accomplish considerable economic distress from financial centers in New York, Chicago and San Francisco.
But those places produce neither petroleum, nor foodstuffs.

look on the bright side: our red zones have most of the guns and all the military bases. I wish that was true. California has almost as many bases and troops as the rest of the country put together.
OTOH if California was to become a country it would mothball those arms and troops and become a 4th world country inside of 2 years.
