BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iyad Allawi, a prominent member of Iraq (news - web sites)'s interim Governing Council, has stepped down as the head of the executive body's security commission, his party's newspaper said.

Baghdad daily, mouthpiece of the Iraqi National Accord, said he "renounces his mission at the head of the commission.

"The commission does not have prerogatives to find effective solutions to the deterioration of the security situation" in the country, it said.

The paper said Allawi had submitted a letter to the current Governing Council president, Massud Barzani, in which he expressed "reservations on the measures adopted by the top civil administrator (Paul Bremer) and his armed troops."

It did not elaborate and Allawi was not available for comment.

The move came amid widespread protests against US-led coalition offensives across the country against Shiite and Sunni insurgents.

On Thursday, interim human rights minister Abdel Basit Turki submitted his resignation, a day after the interior minister quit. Abdel Karim Mahud al-Mahamadawi said Friday he has suspended his participation in the Governing Council.

The three cited reasons linked to the deterioration of the security situation in the country.

A Sunni member of the Government Council, Ghazi Ajil al-Yawer, has also threatened to resign if the coalition does not peacefully resolve the crisis in Fallujah, west of Baghdad, which is under siege by US marines.

Some 400 Iraqis have been killed there and 1,000 wounded in the offensive since Monday, according to an Iraqi official.

....does not peacefully resolve the crisis in Fallujah

In other words, negotiate with terrorists. Don't do it.

Better to find out now where their allegiance lies, IMHO.

Let them all quit, if their allegiance lies with radical Islamists.

Once July gets here, they'd be able to do that and let us clean up the mess.

These people don't want democracy - I think they would prefer a King or some other ruler! They want someone to do the work for them.

"What is wrong with these people?"

They are opportunists and politicians waiting to see which way the wind blows. However the US responds I would not suggest anything that looks like weakness.

He stepped down from the SECURITY commission......not from Council.

Yep ~ only negotiate with a terrorist after we've killed them!

We are winning ~ the bad guys are losing ~ trolls, terrorists, democrats and the mainstream media are sad ~ very sad!

Atr least one of them, a woman, has been assassinated. It reflects the pervading fear that association with the Americans can be dangerous, especially if we leave. I am sure they are concerned about the uptick in violence and how that will affect them and their families. Understandable but sad.

A Commission in search of leadership

This is what happens when you free a society who were under someone's boot for 35 years. What some people don't realize is Saddam security police penetrated so deep into that society.....that children ratted out parents.

It isn't that these people are cowards .....it's because they have been conditioned....that if you spoke up ......you got killed. It will take years to break that conditioning.

That appears to be accurate. If a true leader appears soon it would be unusual, although such things have happened in history. Plan on a couple more generations before this insanity dies out, if things go well.

The is not much "character" in the lands of allah. Not in the cultures of allah. Not in the religion of allah. Not in the citizens of allah. Not in the soldiers of allah.

And character counts. How many muslims have you known, heard, seen that displayed a "value system" consistent with yours? Equal to yours?

Be not confused, during any phase of WWIII.

This individual is in effect changing sides. His lack of character demands he switch over to islam's side.

For him, terrorists' targeting of civilians is okay. But soldiers' targeting of terrorists is not.

It is better now, for he has declared his loyalty. Until this, he was being dishonest.
