This goes beyond just bias. It is outright propaganda.

Post-NewsMedia Conservative History ping - Ben-Veniste Lies Like A Rug, And The Washington Post Covers For Him

It's just for this reason that I've created a new category to go with the Media Shenanigans/Schadenfreude classes - Post-NewsMedia Conservative History.

On, Off, or grab it for a Media Shenanigans/Schadenfreude ping:

Richard Clarke wrote the memo...well, this explains why he was pushed aside. The content has all the intellectual depth and research skills of a fifth grader.

I'm sorry, I don't. I do know that during her testimony last Thursday Rice referred to raw notes that did not get put in the book so she was able to read the entire exchange between Woodward and President Bush that put this one quote Clarke had been throwing around in context.

Incidentally, the next day CBS news of all places wrote an article about a former Kerry campaign manager name Jim Jordan who spent the time during Rice's testimony sending out faxes to reporters ostensibly refuting her! He even started Wednesday, CBS said, by sending them that Woodward quote Clarke had been using. Unbelievable.

I couldn't believe CBS even wrote about it, but am glad they did. I don't have the Woodward book so can't help you on that or any other quotes, though.

So the memo everyone's been making a fuss about is one Bob Woodward had already reported on? Well, that's interesting. . .I have to wonder if he's playing Deep Throat again. Any indicators of Woodward being linked to Richard Clarke, Joseph Wilson, or anyone on the 9-11 Commission?--wasn't it Bob Kerrey who wanted this memo declassified?

I just reviewed the transcript of Rice's testimony; looks like both Kerrey and Ben-Veniste initiated the discussion about declassifying the memo. Some Google searching on Woodward and Ben-Veniste led me to this quote from an earlier 9-11 Commission transcript:

Google search: "Ben-Veniste reported by my friend bob woodward"

Text: Public Testimony Before 9/11 Panel... BEN-VENISTE: We have worked together now for a year under extraordinary ... to Mr. Clark, and I guess, as previously reported by my friend Bob Woodward in his ... www.nytimes.com/2004/03/24/politics/ 24CND-PTEX.html?pagewanted=82

This quote evidently comes from the transcript of the 3/23-3/24 hearings. I'm not subscribed to the Times to get into the link for the full quote and its context. Does anyone know somewhere else to find a copy of the full transcript of the 3/23-3/24 testimony?

BTW, here's something else Woodward is up to lately:

GOPUSA :: GOPUSA Forum: Political Discussions (Posted April 10, 2004)

Bob Kerrey, 911 Commission member, has written yet another hit editorial on the Bush administration. I have never seen anything like the way this partisan commission operates. It's an obvious, open witchhunt and nothing more.

The premier dirty tricks show, "60 Minutes", will be doing another book interview tonight to try to bring President Bush down. The choice this time is Bob Woodward's "Plan of Attack". I think we can write our own story on the plan of attack by the biased left wing media.

I found the transcript--both Richard Clarke and Ben-Veniste refer to Woodward, and it is indeed Ben-Veniste who refers to Woodward as "my friend":

9/11 Commission Hearings: Wednesday, 24 March 2004: ON THE COUNTERTERRORISM POLICY OF THE UNITED STATES MARCH 24, 2004

[SNIP]

CLARKE: I believe the Bush administration in the first eight months considered terrorism an important issue, but not an urgent issue. Well, president Bush himself says as much in his interview with Bob Woodward in the book Bush at War.

[SNIP]

BEN-VENISTE: We have worked together now for a year under extraordinary leadership from our chair and vice chair, and we may have differing opinions. And we do. And we express those to each other. But this has not been a partisan commission, and I believe that we will be able to satisfy the expectations of the public in doing our work in a nonpartisan way, in an objective and professional way, which will make for a credible final report that this commission will issue. Let me ask two things. One, I thank you for your refreshing and direct answers and candor, Mr. Secretary. When you indicated that you looked through the index of Mr. Clarke's book, that sparked me to borrow Mr. Thompson's copy and take a look at page 30. And in that regard there is a discussion of the immediate aftermath of 9/11, when the top leaders of our country assembled at Camp David with the president. On that occasion, according to Mr. Clark, and I guess, as previously reported by my friend Bob Woodward in his book, there was a discussion of the possibility of an invasion of Iraq, utilizing 9/11 as the pretext for that invasion. According to Mr. Clarke's book, both you and Secretary Powell resisted any notion put forward by Secretary Rumsfeld or Deputy Secretary Wolfowitz that the events of 9/11 justified the invasion of Iraq. Could you comment on that?

To me this correlation between Ben-Veniste and Clarke's emphasi, and the media's reporting looks like Ben-Veniste and Clarke had coached each other on their testimony before the hearing, or had been mutually coached by a third party.

And speaking of memos and reports...ever seen this one?
Patterns of Global Terrorism: 1994
The AIG employed an ominous new tactic in December, when AIG militants hijacked an Air France jet at Algiers airport, killing a French Embassy cook and a Vietnamese diplomat in the process.
That was the one where the Eiffel Tower was a possible target. Pretty ominous new tactic indeed.
Of course, it isn't mentioned what that tactic is in the report, though it should've been, don't you think?

Also, another tidbit about Ben Veniste is contained here...9-11 Commission Testimony Too Hot To Be Under Oath by Tom Flocco though I've not checked into it.
CONFLICT OF INTEREST?
We were shocked to observe how tough and somewhat persistent Richard Ben Veniste was during his opportunities for questioning. This is the same Richard Ben Veniste, a former Watergate prosecutor, who is a partner in the German international law firm Mayer, Brown, Rowe and Maw which happens to be the lead firm representing United Airlines against 9/11 victim families in the New York City litigation in Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein’s District Court in Manhattan.

And one more with some interesting points and some real good info...
