[history]
The television at Steve's Barbershop in Peoria, Ill., was tuned to National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice's testimony before the September 11 commission yesterday, and co-owner Steve Bainter and his customers watched her in awe.
"I'd say she's done an excellent job, but I was expecting her to do that. My customers agree," Mr. Bainter said, when contacted by The Washington Times and asked whether he was watching the much-ballyhooed hearing.

" Mrs. Bird charged that some Democrats on the committee, notably Mr. Kerrey and lawyer Richard Ben-Veniste, were "extremely difficult" with the star witness, but Miss Rice more than held her own."
Ben-Veriste in particular came across very badly. I think he did far more damage than good to the Democratic effort to use this panel as a campaign smear tool. He was in entirely the wrong mode.

It sounds like these people saw the same thing I did. Dr. Rice raised the bar on decorum, comportment, and poise ... in stark contrast to the past several days of partisan delusion from Ted Kennedy, et al.

"You could really tell who was grandstanding," said Mrs. Bird, who lives in nearby Galena, Ill. She's referring to ALL who watched when she says "you"!...perhaps millions?

Lawrence, KS is the home of The University of Kansas... not exactly a bastion of non-partisanship. That this reporter was able to find someone who wasn't, wholeheartedly, anti-Bush is remarkable in and of itself.

I agree with the main point of this article. This morning's media edits and slants to minimize/dismiss Dr. Rice's effectiveness are not at all surprising. But any objective observer who watched yesterday morning, or the re-runs in the evening, undoubtedly was impressed by Dr. Rice's frankness and knowledge. My apolitical wife's first comment, when she was hardly even paying attention, was that "[Dr. Rice] just talks and talks, not trying to hide anything."

As for intelligence failures before September 11, the Midwesterner said the panel will find out that what "went wrong has been going on for 30 years, and that it's ridiculous to blame the Bush administration's first eight months in office." And THAT'S what Republicans will take straight to the bank this November.
I think there were several "have you no decency" moments provided by this ugly spectacle, and will permanently change minds of some viewers. The media will spin and spin, but will not be able to undo the damage among viewers and those they personally interact with. The Dems have once again shot themselves in the foot, IMHO.
To: wayoverontheright
the Demo spin machine is dying as Americans are not tied to getting their news from the networks/CNN. It's a new era, and one that began in the 2002 elections, when coverage of the MN Funeral/Rally, the NJ switcheroo, and other such events actually exposed the Democratic party for what it is today. A party void of ethics, moral clarity, and vision for the future.
This election will be bloody. This election can be called the Media v. Bush; Kerry and his campaign are nearly irrelevant. The question will be how effective the media is in bringing down Bush, and whether the GOP can effectively challenge them.

Your comment about this being the media vs. Bush is right on target. I think the MEDIA has been exposed, also, not only as being biased, but willing to resort to willful distortion. I guess the question is do they or do they not have the CREDIBILITY to pull this election off for Kerry. I think not, and for the reasons you mentioned.

After she testified for multiple hours privately it was blatantly obvious why they wanted her to testify publicly.
The Dims wanted the opportunity to excoriate her infront of the public. They also wanted the opportunity to blame Bush for everything and discredit Rice, a potent member of the Bush team.
I didn't see the testimony but I read every word of the transcript. I didn't see the posing and posturing of Kerrey and Ben-Vineste. I didn't need to. Their scathing scurrilous remarks reeked from the print. Condie took their heads off. They looked like partisan hacks but she made them look like they were the ones trying to conceal the truth ( which they are) .
