After reading Desertdoc's article and the info on your page, I realize how little we (the rest of us) know about what drives these fanatics.

I think we do need to learn more and fight it on both fronts, as Tim mentions in his Bin Laden Mahdi article: both by force and by having more moderate Imams debunk them.

This is exactly what President Bush has been trying to do.

Well, that's an entertaining movie (and so is the other one made about the Brits v. the Mahdi, "The Four Feathers"), but it's not very accurate on the Islamic end.
I'd rate it somewhere between "The Ten Commandments" and "The Omega Man" in terms of Heston flicks, but definitely not in "Planet of the Apes" category.

That requires a dissertation. But since you asked.....
I think Islam would have to roll the clock back to the Mu`tazilah movement of its early days (first three centuries) in order to find some indigenous rationale for a "reformation" or "enlightenment." Islam as it is constituted today simply seems incapable of doing so. Ironically enough, I would argue that of the two branches, Sunni and Shi`i, it is the latter that is more open to resurrecting the concept of "ijtihad," or "independent reasoning," that would be required for Islam to begin to escape the intellectual tyranny of the guys with the ZZ Topp beards.

Right now, I'm packing for a 10-day trip. I won't have access to a computer. I'll write a longer response when I get back.

I never said that the beliefs I describe are authentic Islamic beliefs. I think I say the opposite. As a non-Muslim, it's not my place to say what is or is not "heretical."

I have said at FR that I do not know Arabic, and have no first-hand knowledge of much of what I write. I accept Prof. David Cook's studies that many of these millennial beliefs are popular. And particularly that some -- I've never said "all" -- radical preachers have taken the allegorical view that the Dajjal is _not_ one individual (Jewish or otherwise), but is a symbol representing all Western culture.

I advocate that this view be marginalized and preached against.

I do not equate millennialism and terrorism. I have no problem with anyone of any religion who sees signs of the End Times.

My concern is when these views are amplified to justify 9/11, dynamite vests, etc.
