The big switchover does not take place in one swoop, though. It happens faster at the Equator and takes longer at higher latitudes -- the closer one gets to the poles. These Polish jokes are getting pretty old.

Other than adjusting my car compass and tv color settings, where's the problem? It's not like this hasn't happened before. The magnetic North Pole has moved about 800 miles since first being visited (some years ago.)

Who cares? We have GPS satellites (as well as gyroscopic instruments) for navigation. And after hearing years of threats about the "hole" (which was never actually a hole) in the ozone layer, solar radiation isn't even on my radar screen as a real threat. Is there any indication that a magnetic reversal would be more than a very minor inconvenience to modern human life?

Another case of bad science. The earth's polarity is "recorded" in ferro-magnetic particles in molten lava, and is "frozen in place" when the lava hardens. Dating lava flows is dicey, at best, and full of uncertainty.
The idea of "mini poles" is nonsense. The likely course of events in a magnetic reversal is that the field diminishes in strength until it is quite weak. Then the unstable field "flips" and in its new polarity begins to regain strength. In theory, there should never be a "null" polarity.
There have been about 10 paleomagnetic reversals, of varying lengths, over the past two millions years (Pleistocene and Holocene). Out ancestors, without so much as a pair of polaroid sunglasses, seemed to do just fine.
BTW, I collected data while a college student to help date the "Mammoth Event."
