Maoist rebels abduct 1,500 youths in Nepal
Times of India ^ | APRIL 7, 2004

KATHMANDU : Maoist rebels abducted around 1,500 youths from three villages in a remote corner of south-western Nepal , a local village official said on Wednesday.

The kidnappings late yesterday were the latest in a wave of abductions by the rebels, who security officials say take students, teachers and others to draft them into their ranks and "re-educate" them at Maoist camps.

"The Maoists kidnapped 1,500 youths and students including teenage girls from Tribhuvan Basti, Kalipa and Parasa villages in Kanchanpur district," Rajendra Singh Rawal, an elected council official, said.

"The rebels took these 1,500 people in 27 tractor-trailers to an unknown destination," said Rawal.

Before departing, the Maoists said they would return to round up more young men from the villages, he said.

Locals were fleeing across the Nepal border to the Indian town of Pilivith in Sonpura Nagar district because they feared more abductions, Rawal said.

Army officials say the Maoists are kidnapping youths and forcing them to join their ranks in the face of mounting guerrilla losses at the hands of security forces.

Human rights groups say both troops and rebels have abducted their opponents during the insurgency that has claimed over 9,500 lives.

In backwater countries, the communists simply kidnap new recruits. In the United States they have to painstakingly win them over ideologically in public schools, universities, and law schools.

Call me a cynic, but something tells me that when the leaders of a leftist "people's struggle" has to shanghai recruits (and children, at that!) it's not all that representative. "Liberte, Equalite, Futilite!"

I can't really answer that with authority, but I believe this report, which originated from the Indo-Asian News Service. It will most likely be picked up by BBC and others shortly with the word "Maoists" changed to "rebels" and vague on the number of abductees.

Here are some previous threads on the subject.

Villagers lynch Maoist rebels

From correspondents in Kathmandu
April 8, 2004

ANGRY villagers lynched seven Maoist rebels in rural Nepal after the guerrillas kidnapped and released some 1,500 people in an abduction campaign that has sparked international concern, officials said Thursday.

The violence came as shops were closed and traffic off the streets across the Himalayan kingdom on the last day of a three-day Maoist strike.

Most of 1,500 youths snatched Tuesday were freed after the Maoists, who want to set up a communist state, made them attend an indoctrination session, said Bhanu Dev Badu, chief administrator of the southwestern Kanchanpur district.

"The villagers were taken to a place 35 kilometres (22 miles) away and most were released after a Maoist-affiliated peasant organisation held a meeting with them," Badu told AFP.

Enraged by the abductions, villagers Thursday caught eight rebels and beat seven of them to death, turning over the guerrilla leader to troops, said an army official, Colonel Ramsharan Karki.

"The villagers also seized a semi-automatic machine gun and a few locally made guns and bombs," Karki said.

In a southeastern district, Ilam, a large band of Maoists attacked a police post where 65 police were stationed, killing a police inspector and a junior officer, a police spokesman said.

He said the bodies of two Maoists had been recovered but more could have been carried away by the rebels when they fled.

Eighteen policemen who were in the post at the time of the attack had contacted authorities but "45 other policemen are feared to have been abducted by the rebels and a search is on to find them," the spokesman said.

A wave of abductions by the rebels has prompted criticism at home and abroad amid reports that villagers in southern Nepal were fleeing for safety across the Indian border.

Rajendra Singh Rawal, the Kanchanpur district secretary for the opposition Nepal Communist Party-United Marxist and Leninist, which opposes the Maoists, said at least 3,000 villagers left their homes for India or neighbouring districts after Tuesday's abductions.

"The government has completely failed to protect villagers, who got kidnapped in broad daylight," Rawal said.

Glad to see the locals fighting back.

Do you know how the Moaists are being funded?

I read somewhere they claim to have started the revolution with a single shotgun

Thanks for the link. What a wacky bunch of nuts. They kidnap people, and show them movies to get them to join the movement.

Sounds a little like Scientology!

Glad some of the villagers decided to kill a few.
