Accused Mailbox Bomber Could Go Free
POSTED: 10:45 am CDT April 7, 2004 UPDATED: 11:19 am CDT April 7, 2004
There's a chance the teen accused in a series of mailbox bombings could walk free.
The law under which a judge declared Luke Helder incompetent to stand trial on federal charges linked to mailbox bombings in May 2002 also could set him free if doctors find he is not a threat to society. But, considering the violent nature of the mailbox bombings that triggered a nationwide manhunt, legal experts say it is doubtful the former Wisconsin college student will be freed in the near future.
Helder, 22, of Pine Island, Minn., is accused of planting pipe bombs in rural mailboxes in Iowa, Nebraska and three other states. Explosions injured six people, including four mail carriers.
After his arrest outside Reno, Nev., Helder was returned to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he was charged with using a pipe bomb in a crime of violence and destroying property used in interstate commerce -- mailboxes.
Helder has pleaded innocent to the charges, which carry a life sentence.
