Choose (MTV) and lose?
MTV's choose or lose TV show | 4/7/04 | MTV Staff

Posted on 04/07/2004 11:23:08 AM PDT by FourtySeven

I received the following, after visiting the website for MTV's "Choose or Lose" show, which, as some may recall, aired an interview with John Kerry.

I wrote to them saying that I didn't like how MTV conducted the interview, especially how he wasn't really asked any tough questions. The main question I would have asked was, "Why did he continue to speak for the VVAW, even after the 1971 meeting where assasination of US Senators was discussed"? I then provided a link to the Wall St. Journal's article on the subject (Opinion Journal). Then I concluded the message with a statement saying, in effect, I didn't expect them to ask such questions, as they're simply a shill for the Kerry campaign anyway.

Just today, I received this as a response, and I thought my fellow Freepers might find it interesting.

Thank you for your message regarding the special "Choose or Lose: 20 Million Questions for John Kerry." The show received an overwhelming response and in fact is the highest rated "Choose or Lose" special in MTV history. Who says young people aren't engaged in politics?

A number of you wrote in to say that while you appreciated the opportunity to hear from John Kerry, you would also like to hear from President Bush on how a second term would impact the lives of young people. We couldn't agree more! We have been pursuing just such an interview with the White House since before we taped the Kerry special. We are trying very hard to bring you a similar special on President Bush as soon as possible.

It's absolutely critical for young people to hear from both leading candidates in this election. If you'd like to encourage those candidates to address your issues by appearing on MTV, please send an e-mail to President George W. Bush at president@whitehouse.gov and to John Kerry at info@johnkerry.com.

Thank you for being part of 20 Million LOUD! and helping us to achieve our goal of getting 20 million 18- to 30-year-olds to vote in the 2004 election. If you are not yet registered to vote, please go to the Choose or Lose section of MTV.com and register.

Now who thinks for a second that: 1. MTV is working REALLY hard to get the President to come on their network, and, if you do believe that... 2. Do you really think, if they got him, that they'd be as easy as they OBVIOUSLY were on Kerry?

Personally, I think MTV's "Rock the Vote", "Choose or Lose" and similar type programing are disgusting in their bias. I can remember watching such programs back when I was a liberal in college, and the impression I would get would be that there isn't anyone BUT Clinton runing in the election at the time! And maybe some big-eared guy from Texas...

As disgusting as their bias is, it is a privately held organization, so they have every right to do what they do. I just hope their audience is more concerned with sex, drugs and rock and roll, as the stereotype dictates, than actually voting.

The thought of such ill-informed, ignorant people voting, en masse, is rather disconcerting.

I do believe that MTV is working hard to get President Bush on. For the sole purpose of sandbaging him.

And of course only MTV can offer that.

"The thought of such ill-informed, ignorant people voting, en masse, is rather disconcerting."

Interesting. All citizens of the United States of America, aged 18 or more, and not a convicted felon nor an insane person, may vote in all elections.

You seem to have a different criterion for the franchise.

Imagine if the liberals were in power, and assumed that all conservatives were, as you say, "ill-informed, ignorant people."

Be careful what you wish for.

I hadn't thought of that angle. Very possible.

This is a form letter and didn't really answer your questions. I hope W has a "scheduling conflict". Sorry, but I think MTV is for the wasted (read: liberals).

You seem to have a different criterion for the franchise [MTV viewers].

Yes, I do. Remember, I said even I was one of the "ignorant, ill informed" that watch that network religiously, almost to the exclusion of all else. Fortunately I woke up, as my desire to be informed was greater than that to be entertained.

The term "ignorant" and "ill-informed" doesn't reflect negatively upon MTV viewers, if they don't choose to STAY that way. "ignorance" isn't a reflection of intelligence. It's simply a statement of fact. Those who choose to watch MTV, and rely upon it for their news source, are by definition ignorant. I doubt anyone can rationally say that someone so "informed" can make an educated descision at the polls!

So that's why I say I hope they DON'T "get the vote out", at least not from those that rely on them exclusively to form their political opinions. The typical MTV viewer is as I described. I think the stereotype holds. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

MTV is owned by Viacom, which is a public company (NYSE: VIA)

I really wouldn't spend any more time worrying about that than you should worrying about euros voting in our election, voting on line, or extending the right of suffrage to illegals.  It's just not going to happen.

If they gave out free piercing or hackey sack bags at the polling places for actually voting, you might get a couple of "young people" to show up, but that ain't happening.

Most of the MTV crowd doesn't even know if they're registered to vote (only if they were caught in a motor voter type dragnet) much less where the polling place is.  Certainly, they're not likely to realize that it's election day, unless they put two and two together when the liquor store is closed.

MTV can put on the DNC talking points from now until Armageddon and it won't motivate that crowd to vote.

MTV wants to see Kerry elected, and that's why they are turning out the young vote.

Bush would be insane to subject himself to MTV's biased questioning. He has few votes to gain, and a lot to lose by being browbeaten by MTV's "unbiased" questioning.

LOL......funny, but could you be a bit more cynical? hehe

On a serious note, I agree. I'm not too concerned. I just hate it when there's obvious examples of bias and literally millions of people fall for it. Oh well, I guess I should start accepting that as fact nowadays.

So did the founders. I would favor disenfranchising anyone who is on taxpayer assistance.

One of the best tactics w/young "save-the-world" utopian types is to tell them that both parties are controlled by evil corporate interests. And that, "Oh, by the way--your vote doesn't count anyway."

Worked for me long ago....

Really? How about recipients of Social Security payments? How about farmers recieving subsidies? And what does that have to do with MTV viewers?

I guess that the good news is that more and more people, well, adults anyway, are begining to realize this.  As the ratings numbers for Peetah, Tom, The Dan, and CNN continue to swoon and the NYT/WP/LAT circulations crash while FOX's climb at the same time, people are getting tired of the pablum.
With the net as ubiquitous as it is, it's up to each of us to be our own news room and serious voters will look into issues and get the real facts.  MTV and their ilk are assuming all the relevance of a buggy whip.
