"The idea of soldier-as-victim might have made some sense in 1971, when the draft was on and some soldiers were in Vietnam against their will. But today's military has not a single conscript; everyone fighting in Iraq and elsewhere is a professional who has voluntarily chosen a hazardous line of work. They deserve our gratitude and respect, not our pity." --James Taranto

The first soldiers were volunteers - they fought to form this country and birth a new form of government. Except during the conscription riots during the War of Northern Aggression and Vietnam Demonstrations - there has never been a time when our fellow countrymen and women didn't gladly take up arms to preserve and protect whether in peace or war.

That is why Chuck Rangel submitted a bill to bring back the draft.

This quote should be used more often when people denigrate the War on Terror or what we are doing in Iraq.

2/3 of those that served in Vietnam were volunteers, including myself.

Do we really need the draft again. Aren't there more than enough men and women who are volunteering to serve?

I was thinking about the ones that rioted and protested - like Kerry and Fonda. The ones like the people who are involved with the Code Pink and A.N.S.W.E.R., the ones who ran to Canada and one in particular who went to Moscow.

War of Northern AggressionI take exception with this statement Sir - I must remind you that the South fired on Sovereign US Territory first. Therefore, I believe that the North had a right and Duty to defend herself and her country from enemies of the domestic kind!

The hysterical DUers have been bellyaching about a draft for 2 years and it hasn't happened yet. Their current projection is after Bush wins the election. Don't expect them to admit they were wrong yet again.
To: dixie sass
No - we do not need the draft again - there are plenty of soldiers willing to defend the US against all enemies - Foreign and Domestic! HUZZAH for our brave soldiers!

It should be remembered that thousands of our civilians died during the terrorist attacks of September 11. None of them signed up for anything. Since our military took the battle to the terrorists and the states that sponsor them, we have had zero major terrorist incidents in the United States.

I am a female, thank you very much and a Charlestonian and we were forced into it. This is not a discussion about that particular war.
