NYC May Restrict Violent Video Game Sales
4/6/2004
The New York City Council held a hearing on two bills that would restrict the sale of violent video games to minors, the New York Daily News reported March 31.
During the hearing, city-council members viewed gruesome scenes from the popular video game, "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City."
"I wasn't even aware that this filth existed," said City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. (D-Queens).
One bill introduced by Councilwoman Gale Brewer (D-Manhattan) would set a fine of up to $1,500 for merchants who sell a game with violent content to anyone under age 18. A companion bill introduced by Councilman Eric Gioia (D-Queens) would require stores to establish special sections for violent video games.
The city council also heard from a representative from gaming companies who said the industry is capable of policing itself.
A spokesman from the city Consumer Affairs Department also raised concerns about First Amendment issues and the means of enforcing the regulations.
"The best way to keep violent and offensive games away from children is for parents to pay attention to their child's purchases," said Assistant Commissioner Pauline Toole.
I really really have to get out of this place.

Let me clarify that: the industry can enforce it, not the government.
After the novelty of peeing on people and going head-to-head with Gary Coleman wears off, its just a sub-par shooter.
The citizen's "role"
is about life, liberty
and his happiness.
We've made government
to promote the general
welfare. Like most things,
libertarians
always get those basic roles
totally mixed up.
Hell, I felt icky being in City Hall Park today, being so close to them...but I had to go there, because Blondie did a free concert there this afternoon. :)
