The number of virus alerts has increased over six-fold in the last year, according to internet security firm, Trend Micro.

The company said that the first quarter of 2004 saw the greatest number of virus alerts ever issued in a three-month period.

Trend Micro during Q1 2004 issued 232 virus warning, compared to a mere 35 issued by the company in Q1 2003.

"The first three months in 2004 were phenomenal," said Clive Wainstein, product marketing manager for Trend Micro

Well, I guess I can share here: recently, our oldest computer, which was briefly accessed by our children contracted something called an "Adtomi Adware Infection." Originally, I suppose, the program merely caused Internet Explorer to create more pop-up windows. Someone, somewhere, reconfigured Adtomi into a worm-like monster. It pops up exe. search windows onto your desktop at start up. It's been a nightmare; creating more and more of these searches, and causing other Windows programs to malfunction. We had to backup everything on the computer and take it to be reloaded with Windows. We not only fell victim to the worm, but were also left in the lurch by Windows and Dell, in attempting to restart the original Windows configuration. There, I've shared...:-)

Anyone here familiar with the w32.protoride.worm? A person I know is infected with it, but the research I did on it(symantec/trendmicro/newsgroups) doesn't tell me how they might have become infected. Plus they insist that their virus filters are always up to date.

I assume it was because they ran an attachment, although I'm sure they'll swear otherwise...

No one can guarentee their vius filters are always up to date, mine update daily between 12-1pm, but if an update comes out at 6am I have that window I am vulnerable.

Even if you had real time updates there is a lag between a virus and the dat file (if I injected you with every antibiotic in the world it does not mean I cant find a bacteria which will make you sick on the planet).

Migt be one of that new family you dont have to run from an attachment (looks like a URL and auto executes).

I'm shocked, shocked, shocked that this could happen after Microsoft started focusing on security three years ago!

I suppose if you went on vacation and left your doors open, you'd be surprised to be robbed.There are plenty of remedies and preventitives available. this topic only comes up about once a week on FR.
