After convalescing at home on Beacon Hill for four days following shoulder surgery Wednesday, Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry [related, bio] yesterday hit the campaign trail again by celebrating Palm Sunday at a Roxbury church.

Kerry didn't address the congregation at Charles Street African Methodist Episcopal Church, but he waved and shook hands as he left the packed church amid a broadside of camera flashes.

The senator didn't wear a sling or appear to favor his right shoulder or bicep, which doctors successfully operated on to repair torn tendons from an old injury.

``I hope that this was an opportunity for him to be contemplative, to thank God for how the Lord has blessed him already,'' said the Rev. Gregory G. Groover Sr., who introduced the senator to the congregation as ``the next president of the United States.''

Groover said he composed his sermon about Jesus' journey into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, at least in part, with Kerry in mind.

``I hoped that the senator would connect and appreciate, in some way, his own experiences with his campaign,'' Groover said later.

Members of the mostly black congregation, some of whom sported blue Kerry campaign buttons on their lapels, praised the candidate for spending the holy day in Roxbury - and for staying for all of the 2 1/2-hour service.

Zonia Heap, 62, said she felt sure the message of the sermon - that Jesus faced his trials with focus, prayer and determination - would help Kerry in his bid to win the White House.

Joyce Palmer of Roxbury said she hoped Kerry's visit would give him some perspective into the lives of ordinary people in city.

Guess he is a little skittish about going to Mass. Furthermore, the little "shoulder surgery" appears to have been quite a success. His handlers should have told him to tone down the arm swinging or people might be a little suspicious of what really was going on at the doctor's office.

You're absolutely right. The media doesn't seem the least bit suspicious about the surgery - if he'd gone right out and pitched a baseball game after walking out of the hospital, they wouldn't have wondered even a bit. Does his forehead look even smoother than it did a couple weeks ago? Something got worked on, but most likely a shoulder wasn't involved.

The war hero Super Catholic did not have the guts to go mass at a Catholic church on Palm Sunday!! My wife and I will be making a donation to the first priest that denies him communion.

he is, but the Boston archbishop is on record as refusing communion to those Catholic in name only politicians who support policies contrary to church doctrine. has ole johnny in a quandry. he goes up for communion and gets refused and it is going to be big news.

Much like the wily Chameleon,Mr.Heinz-Kerry has the ability to adapt his religion to whatever group is giving him a photo-op.

Kerry's surgery was to repair torn connective tissue in his shoulder. I'm not a doctor, but this condition is a classic symtom of Marfan Syndrome. We need to know for sure if the Senator is a Marfanian, as they have tendencies for other tears in connective tissue, and are prone to tears in the aeorta and heart valves (probably fatal.)

So far, Kerry has been able to hide his entire medical records. We are told that he is in excellent health, but so far this year he has had prostate cancer surgery, and now this surgery which may be an indication that his Marfan is nearing the terminal stage.

I saw a close up of Kerry's elongated horse face (another sign of Marfan) last night on tv, and he was white as a ghost. He doesn't look too healthy to me.

Kerry hates the Pope almost as much as he hates Bush. Partial-birth abortions, gay-marriage... it's all good to the effete, snobbish ally of the NVA.

If the Clintons were the lubricant for secular, American socialism, Kerry will be its flaccid tool.

His campaign ads are still running with him in "BLUE" eye color.
