Four U.S. Marines killed in Anbar province

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- Four U.S. Marines were killed "as a result of enemy action" in western Anbar province, the military said in a statement Tuesday.

The four members of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force were killed Monday while "conducting security and stabilization operations," it said. It gave no other details.

Anbar province's most-populous city is Fallujah, which hundreds of Marines have surrounded, ready to launch a crackdown on insurgents after a mob killed four Americans and mutilated their bodies last week. The province stretches from Baghdad to the Jordanian and Syrian borders.

It seems like all hell has broken loose in Southern Iraq as well. Italian and Spanish troops have killed a large number of Iraqis. The British too I belive.

MSNBC just reported that the military command in Iraq is reporting that two more soldiers have been killed in connection with the Shiite uprising. No location given

It seems like it is all out war many places in the south at the moment.

Apparently the Spanish attempt to retake Duaniah(spelling?) failed, and that the Sadr militia are still in control.

I wonder if this isn't the beginning of the real war for the future of the Middle East, much larger in scope than squashing Saddam's army?
