Clash of the Titans: Liddy Takes Aim at O'Reilly
Talon News ^ | 4/5/2004 | Jeff Gannon

WASHINGTON (Talon News) -- Last week, radio talk show host G. Gordon Liddy told Paul Begala and Tucker Carlson of CNN's Crossfire that he would like "a shot at Bill O'Reilly," after he was asked what conservative would he most like to take on during the 'rapid fire' segment of the show.

This came a day after Liddy appeared on Deborah Norville Tonight and said, "O'Reilly is an embarrassment to our side," answering questions regarding O'Reilly's style on radio and television.

Liddy's remarks were made during interviews with the veteran host alongside Al Franken, a host of the new liberal network, Air America. In a reference to a confrontation last year at a book fair between O'Reilly and Franken, he said, "O'Reilly is no good at radio and part of that reason is because his most nuanced response to a complex question is "SHUT UP."

During the live CNN broadcast, O'Reilly's television producer reportedly contacted Liddy's publicist and requested that he be on Friday's show to discuss his comments but only if he apologized.

Liddy responded, "Tell Bill to pound sand, I'm not apologizing for anything."

O'Reilly's producer subsequently withdrew the offer to appear, according to sources.

Liddy summed up the controversy saying, "Bill did what all bullies do, he ran when someone stood up to him. I found this to be true of bullies as a child and I found it to be true in prison."

That pic is pretty remarkable for an early 70s year old fellow.....his choice in smimsuits is rather poor I agree.

I like both he and O'Reilly....let em dust it up. I think Liddy is probably smarter and has better manners but O' Reilly has been a good voice on somethings.

Problem with both of them is that they try to be too much for too many.

Liddy certainly did his part to elect Carter, and we are still paying the price for that to this day. Sorry G-MAN, you and your thong are just so...wrong, therefore I will not join your throng.

Liddy's first mistake was assuming that O'Reilly is on "our side." O'Reilly's repeatedly said (and shown) that he's not a Conservative or Republican.

Remarkable, until compared to this 89-year old:

Lalanne rules.

Man...I remember Jack and that fairly corny but enthusiastic black and white exercise show when I was a kid and he wore that Flash Gordon looking jumpsuit and had the girl helping him.

He was already fairly old then and that was around 61-65 maybe. I was quite wee.

No doubt, he is king of the longlivers. He swam from Alcatraz recently didn't he?

Same one pulling the little dingy boat behind him? I think so. It must be all the exercise and juice.

On his birthday. Also, I think he pulled a 727 on another one.

Nice pic of Jack Lalanne!

I remember watching him as a little kid 40 years ago on daytime TV.

Then came David Frost, Merv Griffin and Dick Cavett.

I learned a great deal from those guys.

I'd prefer none of them should take off their shirts, thanks...

Slingshots are sort of silly on men I agree.

He should know better....however, he is in excellent shape for his age and damned sharp mentally too.

Liddy qualifies as eccentric....a quality I often admire and aspire to (how am I doing?).

He is also very well mannered to callers....probably more so than any other top 10 host. He's very popular here in Nashville. I have seen him here a few times and my wife loves him like a grandpa though admittedly that would probably not be what he has given the chance..lol...I think Diana got him to tone down the horndog thing a bit the past few years. When he was on with Cameron and John, they acted like it was The Locker Room hour at times.

He is my favorite overall though Rush' contributions to my(our) cause are immeasurable....probably only eclipsed by Reaganus Supremas, Newt, and maybe DeLay and W as time passes. Quite a legacy.

Only if you accept the media definition of a conservative as anyone who doesn't spout DNC talking points.

Exactly, LOL! He is whiner who acted like a child on this one. Liddy apologize? No way is that gonna happen!

I like him a lot too.

He's funny, dry, irreverant...

Likes to shake things up.

I've admired him since I read his autobiography almost thirty years ago. Gotta admire someone who bites the head off a rat.

Anyone remember the TV movie of his book starring Robert Conrad?

I have a first addition Will myself. One my first realizations that I was leaving my leftism behind as I found Liddy's worldview appealing....a nice turn of the worm I might add at around 22-23.

He was also the only H20Gate player to hold his mud.

Conrad was born to play Liddy..lol....that Bantam Rooster thing and all.

O'Reilly, Matthews, Russert... and Liddy all share a very traditional classics-based Catholic education. They part company by generation.

Liddy is a product of the Jesuits when they prided themselves on the classical traditions of Logic and rigorous thought, let the chips fall where they may. As the years rolled by, a new wing gained ascendancy in Catholic Colleges: inspired by Dorothy Day and the Catholic Workler Party, and by Jacques Maritain and the Christian Democrats.

Inspired by bogus interpretations of an encyclical of Pius IX, who ran a pretty good jail and tyranny system himself, these people decided the only logical thing to do was to promise the peasants and workers everything the communists were promising, but with God and the Church to look everything over and keep the socialist arrangement true to :Christian Principles. O'Reilly,(who is not as bad as the two younger men) Matthews and Russert are exactly this kind of Christian Democrat-Democrat. They also desperatelywant to be accepted by the blatantly anti-Catholic Left Wing Media Establishmnent. So, they are very quick to sell traditional Catholic thinkers like Liddy down the river.

On a less intellectual (and I think a less sincere) level, this is exactly what Katie Couric and Cokie Roberts did to advance their own careers. IMHO, when it comes to Irish-American-Catholic thinkers like O'Reilly, Matthews, and Russert,(who man for man, are splendid chaps, with whom I'd love to share a drink and an argument) maybe it would have done them more good if their ancestors had done a little time in a Papal jail, instead of English ones. Perhaps they wouldn't be quite so enthusiastic about what they consider Church-Sanctioned Socialism as preached by old Pius the 9th.

That makes their feud just as real as Pro Wrestling!

But not nearly as real as amatuer wrestling.

Someone once said O'Reilly was a dumba$$. But I defended him.. .. I said he is just as smart as the average a$$. Sh*tier.... but 'bout as smart.

I truly cant' stand O'Reilly. It's to the point that if I even hear his voice, I cringe and run to turn the channel.
