>Yet the defenders will be operating on a steadily diminishing energy budget . . .

When military
people use phrases like this,
it makes me worry.

Not to be too picky, but I believe that the operation is called "Vigilant Resolve", not "Valiant Resolve".

It's not a serious operation. No U.S. Army engineer brigades, D-9's, concrete mixers, asphalt trucks, paving machines or privates with paint brushes to mark the parking spaces - just Marines.

Other armies' urban combat doctrines involve removing the enemy from the urban terrain. The U.S. Army, on the other hand, knows the way to win is to remove the urban terrain.

behind a barricade of women and children.
Yes, they are big hero's over there aren't they.
I like it. Surround the city, carefully screen those leaving, then MOAB the rest!
I think the enemy may have bitten off a bit more than they bargained for!

Interesting early op scenario. We'll see how it plays out on the ground.

I look for Islamofacist calls for help to go around the world.
Look for UN to get into the act and France/Germany to call for intermediary actions while not doing a damn thing.

Kerry will invoke this as a 'political ploy' which shows no plan for success.

Saudi will probably use this as an excuse to send some of their in-country trouble makers on a haj to Fallujah.

I hope we send in strikes from the east. 5 times a day.

This will be interesting, but other hot spots will flare during this.

The Marines can jam enemy comms to stymie coordination, and once a civilian exodus begins Coalition radio can broadcast messages in the name of the defenders asking civilians to leave.

Yesterday there was an Aljazeera report that the poor reporters were not being allowed by the Marines inside the perimeter.

Then a morning report that made it seem that Aljazeera *had* gotten inside the town.

So let's not forget to jam Aljazeera's sat feed (if they have one) and to absolutely ban them from Iraq once Fallujah is retaken from the beasts.

I think that thousands of women, kids, and old men dispersed throughout
Iraq telling the story of how the entire city of Fallujah was flattened and
reduced to rubble. That the largest piece of rubble left behind can be lifted
by a baby. That the highest mound of rubble remaining could be stepped
over by a baby. That within the city limits of Fallujah nothing is alive, not
even maggots to consume the rotting bodies of the defeated. That nothing
will ever live there for a thousand years. That most people survived, but
those who chose to fight were killed so swiftly and surely that they were
dead before their arms and legs and heads had fallen to the ground.

We need something legendary here.

Thanks for the post

Because the Marines hold the initiative, they can drain the defensive energies to a monstrous degree by precipitating one crisis after the other to which the enemy must respond or concede. Gradually, the Marines will infiltrate Fallujah until the enemy is paralyzed. More than likely the press will interpret these indirect tactics as proof that Americans are afraid to advance or declare that the Marines have been pinned down. Never mind. The job at hand is to win an overwhelming victory at the lowest cost whatever its impact may be on the ratings. It is war, not entertainment.

A very good analysis of what "should" take place. I say "should" because, unfortunately I don't place much faith in the Pentagon planners, or the State Department wonkers to allow the theater commanders to take such bold and sensible initiatives.
