Terror Group Warns Spain on U.S. Support

MADRID, Spain — An Islamic group that claims responsibility for the Madrid bombings says it will turn Spain "into an inferno" unless the country halts its support for the United States and withdraws its troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.

The threat came in a letter faxed to the Spanish daily newspaper ABC over the weekend, the paper said Monday. ABC said the letter was handwritten in Arabic and signed "Abu Dujana Al Afgani, Ansar Group, al-Qaida in Europe."

The same person claimed responsibility for the March 11 bombings in a videotape found outside a Madrid mosque two days after the attacks.

I like your post bayourod. Spain just may wake up, and see what is going on, and I hope so. Laying down in front of the terrorists and rolling over will not stop them from killing you. Appeasement with terrorists just will not work, for they will see Spain as being weak, and just give them more terrorism.

The Muslims power in southern Spain disintegrated after their defeat by Christian armies led by King Alfonso VIII of Castile at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212. The petty Muslim states that reemerged in this power vacuum were unable to mount a unified resistance to the Christian reconquest, and by 1251 Ferdinand III of Castile had reconquered all of Andalusia except the sultanate of Granada, which survived until its capture by the forces of Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492. All of Andalusia was incorporated into the Christian kingdom of Castile.

By the way, the muslims are circulating an urban myth about how April Fools day originated when the Spanish offered the moslems a boat ride back to Africa, but burned them instead.

Ah, those wacky Islamics. Of course, they probably all believe their "April Fools" day story. (April Fools Day, furthermore, is really only celebrated in the Baleares, because Spaniards there got the custom from the English who dominated the islands in the 18th century.)

So, what will the incoming Socialist government do, now that Spain is dealing with what is clearly terrorist blackmail? Will the "we-will-withdraw-our-troops-from-the-Iraq-fiasco" bravado still stand? Or will wiser heads prevail and say "Whoa, wait a minute...."? Heck, now the terrorists are saying that the June 30 troop-withdrawal deadline is not early enough!
