Parents of woman killed by Israeli bulldozer join anti-Caterpillar rally

Parents of a young woman who was killed by an Israeli soldier driving a Caterpillar bulldozer spoke Sunday at a rally to build support for two protests against Caterpillar this month in Chicago and Peoria.

Craig and Cindy Corrie of Olympia, Wash., spoke at the rally at Chicago Temple, 77 W. Washington, about their daughter Rachel, 23. She was trying to prevent the demolition of a Palestinian home in Gaza when the bulldozer ran over her in March 2003.

An Israeli Defense Force investigation cleared the soldier, concluding he did not see Corrie. Activists on the scene disagreed and are calling for a U.S. investigation.

The rally was organized by the International Solidarity Movement, a Palestinian-led group of which Corrie was a member. Joe Carr of Kansas City, Mo., who worked with her, said homes were being demolished to make room for a wall being constructed around a Palestinian village.

"They're putting them in big prisons, basically," Carr said.

Activists will protest the use of Caterpillar bulldozers to destroy Palestinian homes, at the company's annual stockholders meeting April 14 in Chicago. An "International Day of Action Against Caterpillar" demonstration will be staged April 23 at corporate headquarters in Peoria.

Caterpillar spokesman Benjamin Cordani said, "We don't have the legal right nor the means of policing the use of our equipment" in the Middle East.

Hm. If I were anywhere near Chicago or Peoria, I'd be so very tempted to have a couple of giant enlargements made of the flag-burning photos, show up to the protests and just stand there with them. I wonder how many of these ersatz hippies have seen them?

I agree with you completely.....but, I think this point needs to be established:

It's doubtful that Rachel Corrie was actually run over by a bulldozer. Check the pics - there's no way that her body was damaged enough....if she was literally 'run over' by a 9-ton-dozer, there'd be nothing left of her body but a smear.

More likely, she was hit by the blade, or some flying debris. There's a reason why people at construction sites wear helmets! However, the image of this 'poor girl' being 'ground under the treads of the Army of Isreal' makes better copy and pulls all of the right emotions. Sounds much better than 'idiot stands next to bulldozer, gets hit and killed by chunk of rebar'.
