I have heard that J. K. Rowling picked Alan Rickman to portray Severus Snape.
IIRC, She also vetoed Steven Spielberg as director when he insisted on Haley Joel Osment as Harry.

And it's an even bigger shame that Ms. Rowling is so misinformed about AD&D.

Sirius is played by Gary Oldman. Trust me, he WILL surpass your expectations.

I never thought of Gary Oldman as Sirius, but when I heard that I said, "Oh yeah!!" He is a wonderful actor. I didn't think Emma Thompson was the right choice for Trelawny, but she looks fantastic in the trailer. She can do anything.
I was pretty nervous reading the left wing rantings of the director, but the trailer looks really great.
I keep hoping that Tim Burton will be recruited to be a director, but I doubt it will happen. I've heard he doesn't have the best relationship with Warner Bros. even though he did a great job with the first two Batman movies. IMO, Goblet of Fire would be perfect for him. The special effects in that one are going to be great and seem like they would be up his ally- dragons, giant horse, merpeople, a giant ship rising out of the lake, all the characters at the quidditch world cup.

Casting Branagh for that role was one of the best decisions. Branaugh did a very good job -- though I have to admit that given the book descriptions of Lockheart, I was thinking more along the lines of Brad Pitt.

England is further left than the U.S., so it is not surprising that they would gripe she is not politically correct enough. I am not trying to tell people not to read the books in any case. They are some of the best books in that genre.

People keep telling me Oldman was a good choice. I've only seen him in "The Fifth Element", so I wouldn't know... he just doesn't quite fit the image of Sirius that I have. Ah well, I'll wait and see.

After reading "Order of the phoenix" again, a theme which really comes across strong is that the "ministry" is trying to ignore that evil has cropped up again; with the head government guy even sending Umbridge to take over the school and prevent the teaching of practical defense against the bad guys. Very much like our situation with terrorists: some folks want us to just pretend that the bad guys mean us no harm.

I didn't read "Order of the Phoenix" until a few months ago, that theme struck me as well.
The government officials, while denying that the threat existed, took actions that had the effect of giving the enemy aid and comfort.
