Longhorn Beta Delayed to 2005 [Windows XP successor delayed again]

Microsoft is delaying the rollout of the beta of its Longhorn operating system until early next year in order to focus on improving security in... Windows XP...

The beta of Longhorn - the successor to Windows XP - was supposed to be distributed before the end of this year, but has now been moved back...

The move is likely to delay the commercial rollout of Longhorn, which Microsoft said would only be released once beta trial customer feedback had been incorporated into the product...

In 2001, Microsoft spoke about releasing Longhorn in late 2004, but then said it was likely to delay the release until the second half of 2005.

At Microsoft's developer conference in October 2003, the implication was that Longhorn would be more likely to ship in 2006, again hinted at by Bill Gates this week at a conference held by analyst Gartner.

Yet Gartner predicts that the delay could be even longer, with the new operating system not shipping until 2007.

At this rate, Longhorn won't ship before 2008 or will ship earlier only with drastic cutbacks in features. Apple's annual discipline of major upgrades to OS X is looking more attractive all the time.

Yup, there's nothing like renting your OS for $130/year.

At least you get what you pay for.

I never can understand the mentality that has to have the latest and greatest. I use a PII/400 Micron laptop running Windows 98se that beats the crap out of the laptops my comtemporaries use (Dell Latitudes PIIIs) for speed and quality.
My home PCs are PIII/866 running Win ME on both and they run very nicely. I will never, ever upgrade to XP and I may never, ever own a P4 machine. All of these machines do what I need them to do and they are stable when maintained properly.

Longhorn? That's a cow in Texas right?

I have an HP Pavilion Pentium III 903 Mhz PC running Windows XP Service Pack 1. Its been very stable and the best thing about it is I don't have to reboot it every day like in previous versions of Windows.

Windows 3.1. Windows 95. Windows 98. Windows 98ME. Windows 3.51. Windows NT. Windows 2000. Windows XP. Windows 2003. AND McAffee. Zone Alarm. Spyware Remover. Popup Blocker. Spam Blocker. Virus repair costs. Wear and tear on the CPU from scanning for virii. The list never ends.

Here's the bottom line:

It's my money and I will buy whatever the hell I want. It's really none of anyone's business. Apple has not forced me to buy a single thing I didn't want to.

That being said, I get my money's worth.

My 133 with win98 is still chugging along. I would have even kept win95 (I had it tweaked perfect for my needs) except I needed USB support.

Windows 95 had a service release that provided USB support.

I thank God every day that I don't have that attitude. Windows 2000 was so superior in every way to 98 and XP is even better. I now have XP on all my machines except one old one with 95 on it.

One advantage of OS X is that it gets faster on old machines (I have a G3 Powerbook) with each update because Apple continues to optimize the code. So not only do I get a plethora of new features with an upgrade, I also get more speed.
