Why not to delay it indefinitely... ? Who cares! Thousands of businesses have invested billions of dollars in new software development based on Microsoft's promised Longhorn delivery times and feature sets. Many of those companies will go out of business or lay off employees or outsource work to India because of the continued delays.

Some of those companies ought to pick up the slack and run with it ... there's a big window open for an interloper to produce a new non-MS OS.

I just built 2 new boxes using AMD processors and XP Pro. The difference between the new boxes and the PII 300 Win 98 boxes they replaced is like night and day . . .

Some of those companies ought to pick up the slack and run with it ... there's a big window open for an interloper to produce a new non-MS. Desktop GNU/Linux is looking good on the Intel/AMD side, and Mac OS X continues to attract new users, especially among trendsetters. Because these operating systems -- soon to be joined by Sun Solaris -- are incorporating support for MS protocols, changing platforms is easier every day.

I just want to point out that Zone Alarm, anti-virus, spyware remover, pop-up blocker (also needed by Mac-users), and spam blocker (which even Macs need) are all FREE. In addition, barring networks, anyone who pays for "virus repair" needs a few minutes of computer education.

The superiority of the MAC OS seems clear. Ever since Windows 95, I think that Microsoft has exemplified a triumph of style over substance.
My university has required upgrades over the years, and now I have been using XP Pro. I find that I've had to upgrade to a new machine and operating system approximately every three years, as the quantity of data in graphics files, and all of the other new features, increases steadily. I hope that XP and Office XP will work for some years to come, and I won't need to use this Longhorn.

Thanks I'll have what he's having, only with a regular baked potato- butter, sour cream and chives, and a cup of weapons-grade, industrial-strength horseradish.

I am also using Windows 98SE. It's a pretty good OS and does many things that XP cannot do.
We use XP at work, I don't understand it well but it's a little more stable than 98. I suppose some day I will have an XP machine at home, but I'll always have a 98 machine as well.
As for Mac, I used a iMac, origional model, for 3+ years at work. It crashed at least once a day if not several times, and "rebuild desktop" did nothing to help. It was a real dog and I wouldn't have one in the house.

I am with you, I never buy a new PC, I buy old ones for less then 100 bucks. Work great, less money. But the peple that do have to have the latest and greatest are th gamers. I understand games are very demanding.

XP does everything I want it to do, and more. (I don't even know what all it will do since I only use the functions I need). Why is another OS even needed?

Good news. Windows XP runs so well that I don't want to contemplate replacing it anytime soon with some newfangled version.
