The biggest reason for the "loss" of manufacturing jobs is increased productivity as a result of advancements in technology.

Less people can make more things than ever before.

It is safe to add that to the equation. An example:

The company I worked for had a cafeteria with 19 employees. All Union. The company asked for a reduction of 1 or 2 employees to be removed to cut costs. Not to fire them, just to move them. The union refused and chose to fight after the company made a compelling argument that the positions somewhere else would serve the company better.

A couple of days later, vending machines showed up in the cafeteria. All 19 employees were fired.

Technology :)

Can anyone tell me why Republican leaders are not shouting this to the country?

Not quite as good as CB's article, but it is a Republican leader stepping up:

Thank you for your comment. Many times, a simple and clear explanation of a complex subject is what I have in mind. Sometimes I succeed at that. As the saying goes, even a blind pig can find an acorn every now and again. LOL.

And, if we (the politicians) really wanted to get 200,000-500,000 AMERICANS back to work in high-paying computer technology jobs, all we (the politicians) need to do is revoke all the H1B visas and send those people back to get in line for a normal visa. And those would be jobs that Americans want.

I don't mind that smart people want to leave their countries and come here to work. It benefits them, but I think that the US also benefits by having them here. That said, however, I think the H1B visa program has significant flaws. Mainly that it's very difficult for the employee to switch jobs: at that point, the free market stops functioning.

My letter to the editor was published over a month ago. At that time, I posted the letter on FR as well as the stats. I'm not going to go look them all up again.

I don't mind looking them up them up myself if you could give me a clue as to what to search of in the FR archives.
I just thought it was a great letter and I would love to use it myself if only I had the stats to back it up.
Really didn't want to put you to too much trouble though.

Do you have any updated numbers on the Household Survey?

My understanding is that the Household Survey, like other data collections by the Dept. of Labor, are gathered and reported monthly. You should be able to find on their .gov site the raw statistics and the "seasonally adjusted" ones. For the reasons in my original article, the Employer Survey should continuously understate the employment status of Americans, as compared to the Household Survey.
