LONDON: The British Home Office is considering legal action to deport the hardline cleric Sheikh Omar Bakri Mohammad, who told Muslims yesterday they must not help police to identify terrorist threats in their communities.
Senior British officials are urgently reviewing the immigration status of the fundamentalist Syrian-born cleric and that of other radical Muslim leaders as the Government tries to curb their activities.
Sheikh Bakri, whose militant al-Muhajiroun group has been blamed for sending young Britons to fight abroad, caused outrage by ridiculing moderate Muslim leaders who are urging Britain's mosques to take a lead in the fight against terrorism.
He accused Britain and the US of being involved in "terrorist activity in Afghanistan and Iraq".
His defiant comments came as British police yesterday arrested a ninth man in connection with the major anti-terrorist raid earlier in the week, in which police seized half a tonne of explosives material.
Sheikh Bakri said yesterday he did not care if the Government tried to deport him. He has boasted that as he does not have any travel documents the authorities will face difficulties in finding a country to take him.
He went to Britain in 1985 after being deported from Saudi Arabia because of his membership of a banned Islamic group.
The 44-year-old father of seven lives in Edmonton, north London, and has often complained about police bugging his telephone calls and searching his home and his office in Tottenham.
He had been given indefinite leave to stay in Britain but one official source said: "To say Mr Bakri's status is under review is not an inappropriate term to use."

Sheikh Bakri said yesterday he did not care if the Government tried to deport him. He has boasted that as he does not have any travel documents the authorities will face difficulties in finding a country to take him. Perhaps they can put him on Pitcarin island?

I think we all need to locate an island in the middle of the ocean. We should build a tall, strong fence around it, and deport all these guys to it. Deliver food once a month but allow no communication with the outside world and make sure it's too far from anything to ever escape from. If you can't find a country to take them back, send them to the island.

This rat needs to be "disappeared."

send them to the island Make sure you decorate with a psychadelic touch and only allow inmates to refer to each other by number, not name.
We could call it "the Village"...

I really need to buy that DVD boxed set the next time it shows up at Costco.
On a serious note, we are at war, and it's about time to start "disappearing" guys like this.

See what happens when you give up the death penalty? You get stuck with people like this. Syria won't take him, who will?

He has boasted that as he does not have any travel documents the authorities will face difficulties in finding a country to take him. I wonder how this rocket scientist figures it's the authorities' problem? Syrian-born? Close enough. As far as I'm concerned, they can accept him or make dog food out of him. All the same to me.
